The two ovals on the primary face do not look like eyes — they look like doorways, placed side by side, waiting.
This is one of the rarer structural compositions in the dzi tradition: a true Double Heaven Gate & Earth Gate configuration, in which two complete gate ovals occupy the primary face together, flanked by a single isolated gate on the opposite face, and connecting arch-crown forms on the two intervening sides. The bead must be rotated through all four orientations to be fully read. No single face contains the whole statement.
The primary face (Image 6) presents the defining composition — two soft warm-cream ovals set side by side on a warm chocolate-brown ground, their forms full and symmetrical, neither closed into an eye nor open into a C-ring. These are gate ovals: bounded, complete, architecturally intentional. The ground colour is a genuine warm chocolate-brown with a russet warmth throughout, and the polished surface catches light evenly across the full body length. The opposite face (Image 8) shows a single gate oval with internal framing bars — a rectangular gate structure that reads differently from the paired ovals, giving the bead an asymmetry that only becomes apparent once the bead is turned in hand. The two side faces (Images 7 and 9) show the connecting arch-crown motifs — layered cream arches that link the gate compositions across the width, adding visual complexity that the primary and opposite faces alone do not reveal.
The body is an elongated spindle — 60.1mm in length at 12.5mm diameter — one of the longer examples in this collection. The agate itself is high-quality, with a smooth, well-polished surface that shows micro-pitting consistent with genuine age in the macro photography. The end caps (Images 3 and 4) are a warm terracotta-russet tone, distinctly different from the chocolate-brown body — this two-tone agate character is inherent, not applied, and contributes to the bead's visual complexity before the motif is even considered.
The bloodspot inclusions on this bead are cinnabar (硃砂, zhūshā) — mercuric sulfide occurring as a natural geological inclusion within the agate matrix. In the macro image (Image 2), the gate interior shows pervasive rust-orange micro-dot inclusions distributed across the inner oval zone, embedding themselves within the cream-white motif lines. The end caps (Images 3 and 4) carry a fine brown-orange cinnabar speckle across their domed surfaces. This is not surface staining — the inclusions are within the stone, positioned before the etching was applied, and are regarded by Tibetan collectors as a marker of authenticity and auspicious spiritual potency. The cinnabar concentration within the gate interior is particularly notable: the bloodspots sit inside the symbolic threshold itself.
Compared to the two completed Heaven & Earth beads in this collection: At-121824-HE2 (48.3mm, deep dark brown, single-oval composition generating four statements) and At-082324-HE3 (48.2mm, cool grey, open-top oval reading as a gate without a ceiling), this bead is substantially longer at 60.1mm, carries a warm chocolate-brown ground rather than deep dark or cool grey, presents two complete gate ovals on the primary face rather than one, and adds confirmed cinnabar bloodspots absent from both of those listings. The At-022624-HEG (32.6mm, charcoal-grey, combined open oval and framed rectangular eye) is a different composition entirely. This bead is the largest and the only double-gate variant in the collection.
The Double Heaven Gate & Earth Gate Motif
The Heaven Gate (天門, tiānmén) and Earth Gate (地門, dìmén) motif represents the threshold between realms — the opening through which consciousness passes, the boundary between the mundane and the sacred. In Tibetan dzi tradition, the gate oval is understood as a portal: a space of transition and clarity. Where a single gate bead presents one threshold, the Double Heaven Gate & Earth Gate configuration doubles this symbolic function — sky gate and earth gate together, the full vertical axis of existence held in a single bead. The motif is associated with clarity of mind, greater wisdom, and the capacity to perceive beyond ordinary limitation.
