New Double Wave Motif Dzi Bead, 57.8 × 12.6mm, very dark brown agate, honey-brown end caps (N-062226-DW3)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

The ground on this bead is as dark as a new dzi ground gets — and against it, the wave reads as something closer to a blade than a curve.

Where the previous Double Wave piece in this collection (N-062226-DW2) carries a very dark warm brown ground and a sandy-beige etched field with a matte, granular texture, this bead inverts nearly every one of those qualities. The ground here is a very deep, very dark warm brown — confirmed from the white-background photographs, where it reads as the deepest brown in the new dzi series, stopping just short of black while retaining unmistakable warmth. The etched motif field is a cool bright white — clean, high-contrast, with none of the warm sandy tone of its sibling. And where DW2 has a semi-matte surface, this bead is high-gloss from end to end. These are two Double Wave dzi that share a motif name and almost nothing else in their visual character.

The form is an elongated fusiform, 57.8mm in length and 12.6mm in diameter, tapering to rounded ends capped in warm glossy honey-brown — a distinct, clearly bounded zone at each tip that separates cleanly from the very dark body. Both drill holes are small and centred within the honey-brown end caps, visible in Images 4 and 5. The taper is more even and symmetric than DW2, giving this bead a more classic fusiform silhouette without the asymmetric drop-off of that piece.

The motif is a Double Wave composition: two wave or tiger tooth forms per face, one in the upper register and one in the lower, flanking a central vertical dark bar that bisects each face cleanly. On this bead the wave forms are sharper and more angular than those of DW2 — the upper wave cuts downward from the top edge with a pointed inward tip, the lower wave rises from the bottom edge to mirror it, and the two tips nearly meet at the centre bar on each face. The resulting composition reads as a bilateral, almost diamond-adjacent form: tightly symmetrical, pointed at the horizontal axis, with the cool white field drawing the eye inward toward the dark centre. The existing listing acknowledges the wave and tiger tooth readings as both plausible on this style of motif — on this bead the sharper, more angular forms lean toward the tiger tooth reading, though the central bar and bilateral structure remain consistent with the double wave tradition.

The three main faces (Images 2, 3, 4) each present the composition slightly differently as the bead rotates — the curvature of the white field shifts subtly, the upper and lower forms varying in how tightly they approach the bar. No two faces are identical. Images 5 and 6 show the angled views toward each honey-brown end cap with the wave forms visible continuing around the body.

This bead is newly crafted within the last twenty years. It is not an antique or ancient bead. No cracks or chips are visible in any photograph. The surface is clean and high-gloss throughout.

The Double Wave Motif

The Wave motif (波浪紋) in Tibetan dzi tradition is associated with unceasing forward momentum and the generation of continuous good fortune — the wave as a symbol of energy that does not exhaust itself. Doubled across two faces with a central dividing bar, the Double Wave composition presents the motif as a bilateral, self-reinforcing form: two waves on every face, meeting at the axis, suggesting balance as much as movement. The wave and tiger tooth traditions share a visual vocabulary rooted in the sweeping curved line, and their overlap in dzi iconography is long-established — on a bead where the forms are as sharp and pointed as these, the tiger tooth reading carries equal weight.
