Four Eye & Earth Gate Dzi, 37.7×12.1mm, Pitch-Black Agate (At-061926-4EEG)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

Turn this bead 90° and you move between two entirely different symbolic languages — the eye, which watches, and the gate, which opens — and both are given equal weight, equal size, and equal compositional structure on opposite faces.

Face A carries the eyes: two fully closed concentric ring eyes placed side by side at the centre of the face. Each eye is a thick cream-white outer ring enclosing a pitch-black interior, with no pupil break — the concentric ring is complete, closed, contained. The two eyes share an upper and lower wave boundary band: a cream-white line that undulates rather than runs straight, connecting the pair and framing them within the face. Vertical cream-white stripe dividers flank the eye pair at each side, two per side, creating a structured panel. The effect is not decorative — it is architectural.

Face B carries the Earth Gate. At the centre of this face sits a concentric rectangular frame — two nested cream-white outlines forming a gate, their edges following the same undulating wave profile as the boundary bands on Face A. Inside the innermost frame: a pointed-oval void in warm dark brown, the natural agate ground revealed within the etched field. This is the earth element — contained, framed, defined by boundaries on all sides. The same vertical stripe dividers that flank the eyes on Face A flank the gate on Face B. The two faces are different motifs in identical compositional architecture.

The ground of this bead is pitch-black — confirmed across multiple photographs on a white background. The etched cream-white motif lines are thick, bold, and consistent in width. The surface carries a high-gloss finish: smooth, reflective, and well-preserved for a bead of this age. The end caps at both tips are warm honey-brown, clearly distinct from the pitch-black body, providing a tonal transition at each tip. The drill holes at both ends are small, neat, and well-centred within the end caps.

Condition is excellent. No cracks. No chips. No medicine digs. No pinholes. No rework. Nothing to disclose beyond what the photographs show — and the photographs show everything.

Differentiation note: Every other four-eye bead in this collection uses a different secondary motif or a different colour register. At-082525-4ETT combines eyes with tiger tooth. At-012325-4E has a warm amber-orange motif on deep dark brown. At-042626-4E3 carries pitch-black ground but uses square-framed eyes with no secondary motif face. The ancient four-eye Ac-080425-4E is 800–1,000 years old with square frames and key-fret connectors. At-061926-4EEG stands alone in combining fully closed concentric ring eyes with a full Earth Gate face in pitch-black agate with wave-boundary bands — the only bead in this collection where the eye and the gate share a body.

The Four Eye & Earth Gate Motif

The four-eye motif (四眼天珠, sì yǎn tiānzhū) is one of the most recognised forms in the Tibetan dzi tradition. Four eyes are understood to represent protection in all directions — north, south, east, west — offering the wearer a complete sphere of watchfulness. In practice, the four eyes on a bead of this form are distributed as two per lateral face, which means the bead must be understood in the round rather than as a single-face reading.

The Earth Gate (地門, dì mén) is a less common secondary element in Tibetan dzi composition. Where the eye looks outward, the gate frames an enclosed space. The concentric rectangular form represents the earth plane — bounded, structured, held. Together with the four eyes on the opposite faces, the Earth Gate gives this bead a dual orientation: four eyes watching the world, and an earth gate holding the ground beneath.
