Nine Eye Motif Dzi, 53.3×12.3mm, Deep Dark Brown Agate (At-070626-9E)

Nine Eye Motif Dzi, 53.3×12.3mm, Deep Dark Brown Agate (At-070626-9E)

📷 We never retouch our photos. Every bead is photographed exactly as it is. What you see is what you receive.

The nine eyes on this bead run from one end to the other without interruption — and the connecting lines between them move in four directions at once, stepping horizontally and vertically across the surface in a dense, maze-like network that reads differently on every face. Turn the bead and the composition shifts entirely. What looked like a row of three eyes becomes two above and one below. The stepping lines that ran left to right now run top to bottom. The network never quite repeats.

This bead shares its crafting tradition with At-051525-9E2 in our collection — the same Tibetan hand-etching technique, the same deep dark brown agate ground, the same cream line vocabulary. Where At-051525-9E2 is distinguished by its pronounced surface micro-pitting and crazing — a heavily textured, unmistakably aged surface — this bead presents differently: the surface here is smoother, the gloss better preserved, the cream motif lines sharper and crisper at the edges. The two beads represent different preservation histories of the same tradition. On this piece, the agate has held its surface integrity across two to four centuries in a way that shows a quieter kind of age: still present, visible in the fine surface character under close examination, but wearing its years with restraint rather than displaying them immediately.

The end caps of this bead are distinctly warm. At both drill ends the agate shifts from the deep dark brown of the central body to a richer, warmer reddish-brown — the stone's own internal colour variation, confirmed from white-background photography. The drill holes are small and well-centred. The taper from the body to each end is gradual and symmetrical, giving the bead a clean, well-proportioned form at 53.3×12.3mm.

No cracks are present in any of the five photographs. This is an independent finding. The surface is sound throughout.

The Nine Eye Motif (九眼天珠, jiǔ yǎn tiānzhū) is universally recognised across Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, China, Taiwan, Mongolia, and Southeast Asia as the King of All Dzi Motifs — the single most auspicious configuration in the entire tradition. In Tibetan cosmology, nine represents simultaneous completeness across every dimension of human fortune: power, authority, reputation, compassion, wisdom, health, wealth, virtue, and the removal of obstacles. A nine-eye dzi is not a bead with nine features — it is a bead whose nine eyes are understood to open nine channels of blessing simultaneously, operating together as a complete field of protection and prosperity. For this reason, the nine-eye has been the preferred talisman of merchants, leaders, and practitioners across Asia for centuries, and remains the most actively sought motif in every serious dzi collecting market today.
