Nine Eye Dzi Bead, 60.6×12.9mm, Dark Brown & Honey-Toned Agate, 300–500 Years (At-082326-9E)

The dark brown runs from eye to eye — and then, at both ends, the stone turns warm.

The body of this bead is a deep dark chocolate-brown, opaque and consistent across all four rotations. The nine eyes sit against it in a sequence of warm cream-tan rings, each one connected to the next by a stepped bar line that runs the full length of the barrel. At both drill ends the stone shifts character entirely: a warm honey-orange tone, slightly translucent, which belongs to the agate itself rather than to the etching — a two-zone colour structure where the natural internal palette of the stone opens up at each tip. It is a quiet but distinctive feature, visible from either end and absent from the body entirely.

The bead is elongated and slender — 60.6mm long at only 12.9mm diameter, with a gradual taper to both ends that gives it a more needle-like profile than the wider fusiform pieces more commonly seen in this age range. The motif lines are warm cream-tan rather than stark white, the gentle yellowing of the etching consistent with three to five centuries of slow mineral change. The stepped connecting bar structure between the eyes follows the same crafting tradition as At-071126-9E8 and its companions from this collection — a precise, right-angle lattice that frames each eye within its own defined field.

The body surface shows fine age-consistent micro-pitting across the dark ground — very small natural surface marks distributed evenly, consistent with several centuries of exposure and handling, and documented here in full. The surface is low-gloss on the body with higher gloss retained at the drill-end tips. No cracks and no chips are visible in any photo. I independently confirm both.

No bloodspot inclusions are visible at the resolution provided.

Material note: The warm honey-orange tone at the drill ends is the stone's own internal colour — natural agate banding that emerges at both tips. This has been documented and disclosed; the material is confirmed as agate pending final owner verification before publishing.

The Nine Eye Motif

The nine eye dzi (九眼天珠) is among the most powerful and sought-after forms in the Tibetan dzi tradition. Nine eyes correspond to nine sources of merit and benefit — the accumulation of good fortune, the removal of obstacles, the enhancement of wisdom, longevity, and protection across all directions. The nine eye bead is associated with Dzambhala, the Tibetan deity of wealth and abundance, and is considered among the highest-auspice dzi forms for wearing or altar use. At 300–500 years of age, this piece was made and worn during the period spanning the late Ming dynasty through the early Qing — a formative era for the Tibetan Buddhist traditions that gave the dzi its enduring significance.
