The cream lines on this bead are not all the same colour — some are white, and some have warmed over three to five centuries into a honey-golden tone that the original craftsman did not put there.

That shift in the motif lines is one of the most reliable things to look at on a genuine antique Tibetan dzi. When a bead has sat in use and storage across multiple generations, the etched cream zones absorb the environment around them — handling oils, incense smoke, the slow work of time — and the result is visible in images 1 through 3: motif lines that read as warm cream to golden at the end zones and brighter cream-white through the central body. No reproduction process produces this gradient naturally. It comes from age.

The nine eyes are distributed across the bead's circumference in two rows, connected by stepped S-curve lines that run between them. Images 1, 2, and 3 each show a face of the bead, and on each face the connector path is slightly different — the lines step, turn, and reconnect at a slightly different angle depending on where the curve of the bead took them. Each eye consists of a dark brown circular pupil enclosed by a cream-white ring. The pupils retain their warmth — brown rather than black — which is consistent with the ground colour and age character of the piece.

The ground is very dark brown, confirmed from flat-lit white-background photographs across three faces. The end caps, visible in images 4 and 5, are warm cream-beige — the classic Tibetan dzi end-zone character, where the agate's original light-toned cortex was retained at the drill points. Both drill holes are small, clean, and centred in their end caps. The surface of the ground carries the fine matte micro-texture of aged agate — not the high gloss of a new piece, and not the crystallisation of an ancient one, but the settled, slightly softened surface of a bead that has moved through several centuries of use.

At 54.8×12.6mm, the proportions place this bead in the standard range for antique Tibetan nine eye dzi of this period. The length is sufficient to carry the full nine eye layout across all faces without crowding.

The Nine Eye Motif

The nine eye dzi (九眼天珠) is among the most sought after of all dzi bead types in the Tibetan and Himalayan tradition. Nine is the highest single-digit number, associated in Tibetan Buddhism with completeness, the accumulation of merit across lifetimes, and protection across all directions. A nine eye dzi is traditionally held to attract good fortune, ward off negative influence, and support the wearer across the full spectrum of Buddhist merit-making. Among collectors, a genuine antique nine eye in intact condition with readable motif lines is considered a significant acquisition.
