On this bead, the honey-gold warmth in the motif lines is not concentrated at the ends — it has spread across the faces, so that the connector lines through the centre of face C carry almost as much warmth as the zones closest to the drill holes.
That distribution distinguishes this piece from the 300–500 year group written alongside it. On those beads, the warmth tends to concentrate near the end zones where handling accumulates — here, two to four centuries of use and environment have moved the patina further across the surface, so that face C in image 3 shows connector lines that read as a distinct warm cream-gold rather than the cooler cream-white of the body. It is the same accumulation process, at a different stage and in a slightly different pattern.
The motif itself is the standard nine eye stepped S-curve layout: nine eyes in two rows, each enclosed by a cream ring, connected by lines that step between them with a slightly different path on each face. Images 1, 2, and 3 show three faces in sequence — the connector paths differ between them, and on face C the motif line warmth is most visible under the flat lighting. The ground across all three is warm dark brown, consistent and even, carrying a moderate surface sheen that sits between the matte quality of older pieces and the high polish of newer production.
The bead's form is notably full. Images 4 and 5 show the two drill-hole ends, and from both angles the central barrel reads as wide and oval in profile — the taper to each end is gentle and gradual rather than elongated. Both drill holes are small, clean, and centred in warm honey-brown end caps. The micro-texture on the dark ground is subtle but visible in image 5, where the end-angle lighting catches the surface.
At 54.8×12.5mm, this bead is essentially the same length as the 300–500 year pieces in this group, but the fuller barrel profile gives it a different visual weight on a strand.
The Nine Eye Motif
The nine eye dzi (九眼天珠) represents the complete count — the highest single-digit number, associated with the accumulation of merit across all directions and all aspects of life. In the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, it is worn for comprehensive protection, good fortune, and the removal of obstacles. Among antique nine eye dzi of the 200–400 year period, the combination of readable motif lines, intact form, and naturally developing patina makes for the most accessible entry point into Tibetan dzi collecting for those who want genuine age without the price of the deepest ancient pieces.
