Pick up this bead and turn it in your hand. What you notice first is not the pattern — it is the shape. This bead does not roll. It has four faces.

The cross-section of this Qing Dynasty nine eye dzi is squared and rectangular with softly rounded corners — four distinct flat facets running the full length of the body, clearly visible in Images 6 and 7 shot straight down the barrel from each end. This form is unusual in any dzi category and exceptionally rare in a nine eye piece. It means the motif was designed not just to be seen from one angle, but to wrap and read across four separate faces simultaneously — a compositional decision that multiplies the visual complexity of the nine eye pattern considerably and required considerably more precision in the making.

The nine eye motif is the most powerful and sought-after configuration in the entire dzi bead tradition. In Tibetan Buddhist cosmology, nine eyes correspond to nine protective deities — each eye a window through which a specific form of divine protection operates. Across Chinese, Taiwanese, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asian business communities, the nine eye dzi has carried an additional and intensely practical association: it is understood as the foremost wealth-attracting talisman in the dzi tradition, the bead businesspeople seek specifically because of its reputation for drawing prosperity and abundance. A Qing Dynasty nine eye dzi — one made when this tradition was being actively practised by Chinese craftsmen working in an imperial cultural context — is therefore not simply an antique. It is a functional object from one of history's great dynasties, carrying its original purpose intact.

Look now at the surface. Across every face of this bead, the cream-white zones of the motif — the eye rings, the connecting S-curve lines, the horizontal bracket bars — carry the same dense granular texture visible across all the Qing beads in this collection, but here it is more pronounced. The edges of the etched lines are ragged and worn, the cream surface is rough and pitted, and the ground beneath has darkened unevenly — deeper near-black on some faces, warm brown with a faint pink-amber blush on Face B. These are not the marks of damage. They are the accumulated surface record of well over three centuries of existence, and they cannot be imitated.

The S-curve connector lines are the feature that distinguishes the nine eye motif from a simple arrangement of nine separate eyes. They link each eye to the next in a continuous flowing circuit that wraps the entire bead — a single unbroken line of connection between all nine protective openings. On this bead the connectors are particularly well drawn, their flowing curves still reading cleanly despite the heavy surface weathering of the cream zones around them.

This is an antique dzi bead from the Qing Dynasty, estimated at well over 300 years old, measuring 58.2mm × 13.7mm in natural high-quality agate. Both drill holes are intact — visible in Images 4 and 5 at the warm brown rounded tips. The end-on shots in Images 6 and 7 show the full cross-section clearly; there are no cracks and no repairs. To compare this piece against the Tibetan nine eye tradition, see the Ancient Nine Eye Dzi — White Agate — Anc-0426-9E in the ancient dzi collection. The two pieces — one Tibetan and ancient, one Chinese and antique — represent the same supreme motif expressed through entirely different traditions, stones, and centuries. For the other Qing Dynasty pieces in this collection, see At-0426-3EQ and At-0426-3EQ2.
