The eye on this bead does not close. Look at Image 1. Where a standard dzi eye presents a complete oval ring enclosing a dark pupil — a bounded, contained form — the eye on this bead is a spiral: a single line that winds inward from the outside, tightening toward the centre without ever fully enclosing it. The effect is not static. It moves. It pulls the eye inward through a sequence of diminishing curves that end, not in a closed ring, but in an open centre — as if the spiral could continue contracting forever. This is the open spiral eye of the Chinese dzi tradition, and it is considerably rarer in the market than the concentric closed ring form that most collectors encounter first.

This bead carries two of them — one on each primary face, each spiral drawn with the confident, practised hand of a Qing Dynasty craftsman working over 300 years ago. The two spirals are not identical. The one on Face A (Image 1) winds with a slightly fuller outer arc; the one on Face C (Image 3) is set against a warmer ground that shifts toward amber at the rounded end. The difference is not inconsistency — it is the natural variation that comes from hand work on a natural stone, and it is one of the markers that distinguishes a genuine antique from a mechanically reproduced modern piece.

Between the two eye faces, the bead carries the connective composition typical of Qing Chinese dzi: flowing angular bracket lines and wave forms in cream on dark brown-to-near-black ground, visible in Images 2 and 4. These are not decorative filler — they are the structural framing that holds the composition together around the full circumference of the bead, ensuring the motif reads continuously from any angle. The cream zones across all four faces carry the characteristic brown micro-speckle surface texture that has now appeared consistently across the Qing Dynasty pieces in this collection — the granular, aged quality that develops over centuries and cannot be accelerated or manufactured.

At 60.6mm × 13.4mm this is the longest bead in the Qing Dynasty group represented here, surpassing even the nine eye Qing Dynasty dzi — At-0426-9EQ at 58.2mm. The form is a classic elongated torpedo with warm brown rounded ends, both drill holes intact and clearly visible in Images 5 and 6. The surface is smooth and even throughout. No cracks. No repairs.

The two eye dzi is traditionally associated with harmony between partners — in relationships, in business, between the self and the world. In the Chinese cultural context, two eyes speak of balance and mutual support: two forces complementing each other rather than competing. On a Qing Dynasty bead of this quality and this age, that meaning has been carried forward unbroken through more than three centuries.
