Four Eye, Lotus & Treasure Vase, 19.9×16.6mm, warm dark brown agate (At-080926-4ELT)
🏛️ Ancient Dzi Shop specialises in authentic ancient and antique Tibetan dzi beads. Every piece is sold with unretouched photographs and honest condition disclosure.
Every rotation of this bead opens onto a different composition — and none of them repeat.
On a spherical bead, the motif has no fixed face and no resting orientation. This one carries three distinct symbolic elements distributed across its full surface — four eye forms, lotus petals, and a treasure vase — and the relationship between them shifts completely depending on where you are looking from. From one angle, two cream eye forms sit above a horizontal connecting bar and a lotus arch below, the whole face reading as a stacked devotional composition. Rotate ninety degrees and the connected double-arch of the lotus petals dominates the upper zone while a cream cross-bar form anchors the lower register. Rotate again and a scroll-like cream form emerges at the upper zone with curved arms below — the treasure vase element showing itself from this face. Turn to any angle between these and the cream lines connect differently, the dark brown ground opening and closing around the motif elements in a composition that never fully stabilises into one reading.
This is the defining quality of antique round dzi in this tradition: the motif is designed to move. The craftsman distributed the symbolic elements across the sphere knowing the bead would rotate, and the composition was built to reveal itself progressively rather than all at once.
The ground is warm dark brown — consistent and even across all photographed rotations, with a matte character that distinguishes antique agate from newer pieces. The cream motif lines are warm cream rather than pure white, slightly aged in tone, and carry a gentle surface texture consistent with 200–300 years of wear. No chips or cracks are observed independently. The drill hole sits cleanly at the top pole.
The Four Eye, Lotus & Treasure Vase Motif
Each of the three motif elements on this bead carries its own tradition within Tibetan Buddhism. The four eyes (བཞི་མིག, zhi mig) are associated with the four cardinal directions and the four-faced aspect of Chenrezig — protective vision extending equally in all directions. The lotus (པད་མ, pema) represents purity and the capacity of enlightened qualities to arise from ordinary conditions — the flower rooted in mud, blooming above the water. The treasure vase (གཏེར་གཞུང, ter jung) is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism, signifying inexhaustible abundance and the fulfilment of wishes. Together on a single bead, these three motifs form a devotional programme that encompasses protection, purity, and the generation of merit — an unusually layered combination for a bead of this size.
