Antique Six Eye Dzi Bead Medicine Digs 36mm Warm Brown (At-082326-6EMD)
🌟 Authenticated Tibetan Dzi Bead | Unretouched Photos | 200–400 Years Old
Six eyes look out from this bead — and between them, the stone carries two marks that were not made by accident.
The six eyes on this bead run in a row of three and three, front and reverse, each one a cream-ringed circle with a warm dark brown centre. The connecting lines between them are fluid — flowing wave-like cream curves that shift as the bead turns, so that what reads as an eye from the front becomes part of an organic interlocking field from the side. This is one of the visual qualities that distinguishes an older hand-worked piece: the motif isn't frozen, it moves with the bead.
Set into the cream banding above the upper eye row, near the centre of the barrel, are two small impressed recesses — medicine digs. These marks are intentional consecration features, made by practitioners who believed that small amounts of medicinal or sacred substances pressed into the stone would be carried within the bead, amplifying its protective power. Their presence is an age and use marker, not damage, and they are disclosed here in full.
The ground is warm dark brown agate, confirmed from flat-lit white-background photos. The cream zones carry that characteristic warmth rather than stark white — a palette that develops over generations of handling and sits comfortably within the 200–400 year range. The bead is fusiform in form, widest at the centre and tapering evenly to both drill ends, with a smooth high-gloss surface throughout. I independently confirm no cracks and no chips.
No bloodspot inclusions are visible in any photo at the resolution provided.
The Six Eye Motif
The six eye dzi (六眼天珠) is one of the most recognised forms in the Tibetan dzi tradition. Six eyes correspond to the six realms of Buddhist cosmology — the gods, demi-gods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell realms — and the six eyes of the bead are understood to offer the wearer protection and merit across all six. The motif also resonates with the six-syllable mantra Om Mani Padme Hum, making this a bead associated with compassion, liberation, and the bodhisattva Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara). Six eye dzi are among the most collected forms, worn both as personal protection pieces and kept as altar objects.
