Six Eye Lotus Cross & Bloodspots, 24.1×10.8mm, cream-dominant agate (At-080926-6ELCBS)

🏛️ Ancient Dzi Shop specialises in authentic ancient and antique Tibetan dzi beads. Every piece is sold with unretouched photographs and honest condition disclosure.

On this bead the dark and the light have traded places — and the bloodspots found the cream.

Most Six Eye Lotus Cross dzi are dark-ground pieces: black or dark brown ground carrying cream motif lines. This one inverts that relationship. The ground is cream — a warm, slightly matte cream-white that covers the majority of the surface — and the motif elements sit within it as dark brown forms: stepped cross arms in the upper zone of each face, large oval eye forms in the lower register, connecting bar structures linking them across the centre. The composition reads clearly once the reversal is understood — the dark elements are the motif, the cream is the field, and the bead reads as pale and luminous rather than deep and graphic.

The cinnabar bloodspots — 硃砂 (zhūshā), mercuric sulfide — concentrate in that cream field. Under macro photography they appear as a warm reddish-brown micro-dot scatter spread throughout the cream zones, with the density rising noticeably at the boundaries where the cream ground meets the edges of the dark oval forms. The overall effect in standard photography is a cream ground with a warm reddish tone — the cinnabar has saturated the pale agate surface across much of the facing areas, and the two macro photographs document this clearly: individual reddish-brown pinpoints in the cream, concentrating at the motif boundaries.

The bead is compact at 24.1×10.8mm — one of the smaller Six Eye Lotus Cross pieces in this collection — and the motif is proportionally scaled to the size without appearing crowded. Both drill ends show warm honey-toned agate with a clean drill hole. Macro photography also reveals fine age-consistent surface crystallisation throughout — a positive mineralogical age marker. No chips or cracks are observed independently.

The Six Eye Lotus Cross Motif

The Six Eye Lotus Cross (also carrying associations with the longevity or tortoise shell tradition in Tibetan dzi) combines two of the most layered motif families in the Tibetan dzi repertoire. The six eyes (དྲུག་མིག, druk mig) are associated with the six realms of existence and with the six-syllable mantra Om Mani Padme Hum — one eye for each syllable, the bead understood as a physical embodiment of the mantra. The lotus (པད་མ, pema) framing represents purity and the arising of enlightened qualities. Together, the composition is understood to support spiritual clarity and longevity — the oval forms reading simultaneously as eyes, as lotus petals, and as the auspicious patterning of the tortoise shell, which in Tibetan cosmology represents long life and the stability of the universe itself.
