Antique Tibetan Double Wave Motif Dzi Bead, 47.4mm × 11.4mm, Cream & Brown Agate (At-052526-DW4)

Antique Tibetan Double Wave Motif Dzi Bead, 47.4mm × 11.4mm, Cream & Brown Agate (At-052526-DW4)

Pick up this bead and turn it slowly. The motif does not stay still. On the first face, the two waves form tall pointed arches — a kite shape, sharp at top and bottom, open in the middle. Rotate ninety degrees, and the geometry softens: the same motif now reads as a wide, open diamond eye, the points pulling outward horizontally. Rotate again and the centre zone opens into a large petal — broad, almost circular, the brown receding and the cream taking over. One motif. Three readings. The Double Wave Motif behaves differently depending on which face you present, and this bead — at 47.4mm — has the surface area to let each reading fully resolve without compression or crowding.

This behaviour is not accidental. In traditional dzi craftsmanship, the wave motif was understood to be dynamic — a symbol of perpetual movement, of success that does not stop at the crest but continues forward. The doubling of the wave intensifies this: two forces running in parallel, creating between them a series of enclosed forms that shift as the light and viewing angle change. Some traditions read the facing waves as the Tiger Teeth Motif; others as the Double Wave. At this scale and in this palette, both readings coexist, and distinguishing between them is less important than understanding that both carry the same meaning: unbroken continuity.

The palette on this bead is unusually cream-dominant. Where many double wave beads present a deep brown ground with cream motif elements, this bead reverses the weighting: the cream agate holds the larger zones, and the dark brown pigment traces the wave lines and stripes across it. The result is a lighter, warmer visual character — less graphic, more organic. The deep chocolate-brown end caps, visible in the angled end-view photographs, provide contrast at each tip and frame the motif neatly at both ends.

Collectors comparing this bead with At-052526-DW3 (also in the shop) should note several clear differences: DW3 is 48.7mm with a darker, more brown-dominant ground and a pronounced torpedo taper. This bead is 47.4mm with a flatter oval cross-section and a much lighter, cream-forward palette. The wave geometry also differs: DW3 presents a bow-tie at the crossing; this bead presents the kite-arch / diamond-eye / petal progression described above. These are not the same piece at different prices. They are two distinct beads with distinct visual characters.

The bead is estimated to be 200 to 400 years old. Material is high-quality natural agate. Condition is excellent — no cracks. Surface weathering marks and minor contact digs are present and authentic.
