Each of the nine eyes on this bead sits in its own framed zone — and on every face, the S-curve connector between them runs a slightly different path.

This antique Tibetan nine eye dzi bead measures 59.8×13.7mm and is estimated at 300–500 years of age. The ground is a very deep dark brown — confirmed across the white-background photographs — with a distinctly warmer reddish-brown natural banding zone at both end caps, visible in images 4 and 5. The cream-white motif lines are well-defined throughout: nine eye circles, each a cream ring enclosing a dark brown centre, arranged in three rows of three across the bead's circumference, framed by T-bar horizontal dividers and linked by S-curve connector lines between each row. The S-curves are among the most characterful elements on this bead — no two faces show them running in quite the same configuration.

The cream motif lines carry a warm sandy-tan interior toning consistent with centuries of mineral absorption within the etched zones — not uniformly white, but graduated. This toning, along with the fine granular texture visible on the dark body surface, is consistent with the age of the piece: both are physical expressions of the agate's long history rather than surface damage. The dark body also shows age-consistent fine surface craquelure within the cream zones under close examination in image 3 — a characteristic of very old etched agate where the treated surface and the stone have aged at slightly different rates over centuries.

The end caps (images 4 and 5) are intact and undamaged. The drill channel is standard gauge, clean at both openings. No chips or structural cracks are present — I confirm this independently from all five photographs.

At 59.8×13.7mm this is a long, substantial bead — among the larger antique nine-eye dzi in the collection. The proportions give each of the nine eye zones full visual space, and the cream lines remain legible and clearly bounded across all three faces of the bead.

The Nine Eye Motif

The nine eye dzi is one of the most widely revered configurations in Tibetan Buddhist material culture. Nine is a number of completion and totality in Tibetan cosmology — the nine eyes are understood to open the wearer to protection and good fortune across all directions and all fields of life. Historically, nine-eye dzi beads have been documented in the collections of Tibetan nobility, monastery inventories, and the personal ornament of high lamas. They are the most sought-after motif among collectors of genuine antique dzi, and pieces of this age and scale — over three centuries old, with clean motif lines intact — are among the more substantial examples available outside institutional collections.
