At 56 millimetres, this is one of the longest two-eye antique dzi beads in this collection — and the extra length shows in the composition. The stripe separators that flank each eye have more room to breathe, the connector faces between the eyes are wider and carry more complex geometry, and the whole bead has a gravity that shorter pieces can't replicate. Each eye sits on its own face, a cream outer ring enclosing a cream inner ring enclosing a small oval pupil — the classic concentric form, generously proportioned, set hard against the pitch-black ground.

Between the two eye faces, the connector zones carry stepped angular cream elements: bracket forms and partial arcs that read more architectural than organic — right-angle turns rather than flowing waves, each face presenting its own geometric fragment before the rotation brings the next eye into view. This stepped connector vocabulary is characteristic of older Tibetan hand-etching work and is one of the features that distinguishes a piece with genuine age from more recent production, where the connector lines tend toward simpler stripe forms.

The ground is pitch-black throughout the central body — confirmed from the flat-lit white-background photographs — and the surface across these dark zones carries a fine, pervasive micro-granular texture consistent with three to five centuries of natural mineral transformation within the agate. The end caps at both drill tips are a warm dark brown, distinctly lighter and warmer than the pitch-black body — the agate's own internal colour at the drill points, not a separate material. Both drill holes are small and clean. No cracks or chips observed.

The cream motif lines are bold and clear, with strong contrast against the dark ground — the etching has held well across five centuries of handling, wear, and the slow passage of time.

The Two Eye (གཞུང་མིག) Motif

The two-eye dzi is one of the most foundational forms in the Tibetan dzi tradition, and among the most widely worn across the Himalayan world — in Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, and among the Tibetan diaspora communities of India and beyond. Each of the two eyes is understood as a watchful presence: protective, perceptive, and stabilising. In Tibetan Buddhist and Bön contexts, the two eyes together represent the paired qualities of wisdom and compassion — the two eyes through which enlightened mind perceives and responds to the world. The two-eye dzi is associated with balance, harmonious relationship, and the comprehensive protection of the wearer across both inner and outer dimensions of life. A piece of this age — at three to five centuries old — has accompanied that symbolism through generations of practitioners, accumulating a depth of use that newer pieces cannot replicate.
