The two eyes on this bead are separated by more than the usual interval — between them, a field of additional cream stripes fills the dark ground, layering the composition with a density that a standard two-eye dzi does not carry. It is the same ancient motif, and a different visual weight.

Each eye sits on its own face: a dark pupil at the centre, a cream inner ring enclosing it, and a broader outer ring completing the concentric form. The ground between and around them is a deep chocolate-brown — confirmed from the white-background shots as a true dark brown — and the cream lines that cross it carry the warmth of old agate rather than the bright white of newer work. The extra stripe field between the eyes reads almost like a chung dzi insert: horizontal cream bands stacking across the dark ground before the second eye begins.

The macro photographs document cinnabar bloodspots (硃砂, zhusha — mercuric sulfide) distributed across the cream zones of the bead. The inclusions appear as dense, scattered dark pinpoints throughout the white and cream fields, with concentration visible across multiple zones. This is a bead that rewards close examination: what reads as uniform cream at a normal distance resolves, under the lens, into a living field of mineral inclusions laid down over centuries.

Condition is good for a piece of this age. No cracks observed. The surface carries the natural character of antique agate — slightly uneven gloss at the ridgeline, consistent with centuries of handling and age. The warm peachy tone visible at one drill end is agate-internal colour, not a separate material.

The Two Eye (གཞུང་མིག) Motif

The two-eye dzi is among the most widely worn and deeply symbolic beads in the Tibetan tradition. Each eye is understood as a watchful presence — protective, perceptive, and stabilising. In Tibetan Buddhist and Bön contexts, the two eyes together are associated with balance: the dual nature of wisdom and compassion, the pairing of clarity and warmth. Worn on the body, the two-eye bead is believed to harmonise relationships and support the wearer's discernment. The variant composition on this piece — with its additional stripe field expanding the ground between the eyes — is understood within the same symbolic register, the stripes adding layers of protective energy to the core two-eye form.
