The white in this motif is not clean — and that's not a flaw, it's where the bloodspots live.
Look closely at the ivory chevron bands running this bead's length and you'll find them speckled throughout with fine rust-red granulation, visible even before you reach for a loupe. Macro photography confirms what the naked eye suggests: genuine cinnabar inclusions scattered directly through the motif's lightest zones, not isolated to one corner or hidden in a seam.
The motif itself reads two ways depending on how you turn the bead. Seen one way, the bold zigzag triangles read as a Double Wave, each chevron echoing the rhythm of the one before it. Seen another, the same lines resolve into a Tiger Tooth pattern — sharp, angular points marching down the body. Both readings are valid; the distinction has always been more about tradition than geometry, and this bead sits comfortably in the overlap.
Ground colour is a warm, even brown, carrying the same fine rust-toned speckling found in the motif lines — the whole bead reads as one continuous material, not a contrast finish layered on top. The form is a confident elongated barrel, rounded at both ends, with a single drill hole visible at one tip set slightly off-centre.
Surface is glossy and even across all faces in the photographs provided, with no chips, cracks, or medicine digs visible.
The Double Wave / Tiger Tooth Motif
In Tibetan dzi tradition, the Wave motif is associated with continuous, unbroken success — its unbroken zigzag read as a current that carries the wearer forward without interruption. Where the same form is read as Tiger Tooth, it carries a different but related association: protection and strength, drawn from the tiger's symbolic ferocity. The two motifs share enough visual ground that a single carved bead can carry both meanings depending on the eye that reads it.
Bloodspots — Confirmed (Tier 3)
Cinnabar (硃砂, zhūshā — mercuric sulfide) is one of the most prized natural inclusions found in genuine dzi material, and this bead carries it generously. Macro photography of the motif's lighter zones shows rust-red to deep red-orange dots scattered in dense, irregular clusters directly through the cream-coloured banding — what we'd describe as cream-zone micro-dot distribution, with the dots embedded in the stone itself rather than sitting on the surface. One macro frame shows a small golden-tan mineral inclusion near the densest dot cluster, a secondary detail worth noting alongside the cinnabar itself. The colour reads warmer and more saturated than the rust speckling visible in the ground colour at standard photographic distance — under magnification, true red dominates rather than the softer brown-rust of the wider surface.

A motif this bold doesn't need age to make its case.
