New Double Longevity Motif Dzi Bead with Bloodspots (N-062226-DLBS)

New Double Longevity Motif Dzi Bead with Bloodspots (N-062226-DLBS)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

The motif on this bead does not read as lines — it reads as cells, and the cells cover everything.

From end to end, the entire surface of this elongated fusiform agate is covered in a continuous hexagonal and polygonal cell grid — the Double Longevity motif, also known as the Tortoise Shell pattern, wrapping the body without interruption across every face. There is no blank ground, no connector stripe, no end cap zone that the motif leaves unmarked. The warm dusty rose-cream etched lines that form the cell borders run from tip to tip, dividing the surface into dozens of interlocking polygonal zones that shift subtly in their geometry as the bead curves toward its pointed ends.

The ground is a warm medium-to-dark brown — not uniform, but variable in the way agate grounds are: shifting between a slightly deeper warm brown on some faces and a lighter honey-brown where the natural banding of the stone comes closer to the surface. This variation is visible in Images 4 through 6 as a subtle tonal shift across the faces, giving the motif a slightly different reading depending on which side faces the light. The etched cell lines themselves are a warm dusty rose-cream — not bright white, not sandy-cream, but a muted, slightly pinkish warm tone that is distinct from any other motif colour in this collection's new pieces. This bead does not look like any of the other new dzi in the shop.

The form is an elongated fusiform tapering sharply to both ends — 58.1mm in length and 13.1mm in diameter — with a high-gloss surface and small centred drill holes at each tip, both clearly visible in Images 7 and 8. The taper is more pronounced and pointed than the gentle fusiform of the Two Eye Treasure Vase pieces, giving this bead a more emphatic, elongated silhouette. No cracks or chips are visible in any photograph. Several small surface pits consistent with normal agate production are present at close examination, none structural.

This bead is newly crafted within the last twenty years. It is not an antique or ancient bead.

The bloodspot documentation in Images 2 and 3 is among the more striking macro photography in the new bead series. Under magnification, the cinnabar inclusions in the cream motif zone appear as bright orange-red to brick-red particulate fragments — angular, irregular in size, scattered densely across the pale cell zones with a particularly concentrated cluster visible at the centre of Image 3. The distribution is cream-zone focused: the inclusions gather within the pale etched lines rather than the darker brown ground, making them most visible precisely where the motif is brightest. Sparser dots extend into the transition zone at the boundary between motif and ground. Both macro images are included in the photo set and document the cinnabar clearly across two different areas of the bead's surface.

Cinnabar (硃砂/zhūshā), mercuric sulfide, is the mineral responsible for these inclusions — a naturally occurring compound within the agate that has been associated in Tibetan dzi tradition with authenticity and spiritual potency. Its presence in a new bead reflects the quality of the natural agate used in production rather than any applied treatment.

The Double Longevity Motif

The Tortoise Shell or Longevity motif (長壽紋) takes its form from the hexagonal pattern of the tortoise's shell — one of the most ancient symbols of longevity and endurance in East Asian and Tibetan material culture. The tortoise is understood to carry the world on its back, its shell a map of cosmic structure, and the hexagonal grid derived from it has been used across centuries as a symbol of long life, stability, and the accumulation of merit over time. On this bead the motif is doubled — two full repetitions of the pattern across the two main faces — making the composition one of the most densely symbolic in the collection: longevity stated twice, in every direction, without interruption.
