Two Eye Motif, 28.3×11.3mm, Dark Agate (N-FA-071426-2E)

The two eyes on this bead do not read the same — one sits tight and well-defined within its cream ring, the other fans out into a broader, softer halo, the boundary between ground and motif blurring before it resolves into the dark pupil at centre.

This bead was crafted in Taiwan using the same deliberate antique-style process as the Four Activities companion pieces listed in this shop — an approach that reproduces the muted colour transitions and surface character associated with aged dzi rather than the bright, high-contrast finish of standard new production. The result is a bead that carries the weight and quiet presence of something older, while being honestly represented here as newly crafted.

The ground is pitch-black through the central body, shifting through a deep warm grey-brown in the transitional zones that flank each eye. The two eyes sit on opposite faces. Face A presents the more defined eye — the outer oval is crisp, the inner pupil clearly separated. Face B carries the broader version, the cream halo wider and more graduated, the pupil sitting softly within it rather than standing apart. From the side, the cream band that passes between the two eyes forms a near-continuous equatorial stripe that reads as a single element until the bead is rotated and the two distinct eyes resolve.

The end caps are dark — this bead does not carry the cream-white terminal zones seen on older antique and ancient pieces. The drill channel is clean and consistent with new Taiwan production. Fine surface marks are present across the body, consistent with the deliberate aged-look finish applied during crafting.

At 28.3×11.3mm, this is a compact piece — close in scale to the Four Activities beads — and sits well as a pendant or as part of a mala or bracelet configuration.

The Two Eye Motif

The two eye dzi is among the most foundational motifs in the Tibetan tradition. Two eyes are associated with the compassion of Avalokiteshvara — the bodhisattva of compassion who looks upon all sentient beings — and are said to bring harmony and watchful protection to the wearer. Two is also the number of balance: between self and other, between action and stillness. The motif appears across the full spectrum of dzi history, from the most ancient pieces to newly crafted examples like this one, and its meaning has remained consistent across centuries and traditions.
