Vintage Double Wave Motif Dzi Bead, 31.8×11.6mm, black and brown agate (V-071425-DW)

The cream lines on this bead don't read the same way twice — at the front face they move as two parallel waves; rotate the bead a quarter-turn and those same lines form opposing arches; rotate again and they resolve into two stacked chevrons pointing toward each other.

That shift is built into the design. The double wave motif wraps the full circumference of the bead, so the composition is never fixed to a single face. At each quarter-rotation the cream lines rearrange themselves into a different geometric reading — wave, arch, chevron — without the motif itself changing at all. The cream is applied crisply and cleanly, and the lines hold their width and curve across all four faces without interruption.

The ground runs in two clearly distinct zones. Through the central body — confirmed from the flat-lit white-background shots — it is pitch-black, with a slightly open, fine-grained surface texture consistent with the piece's age. The end caps tell a different story: at both drill ends the stone shifts to a warm tan-brown, smooth and polished, a natural consequence of the agate's internal banding where the drill meets the stone. That warm tone is visible in both the end shots and at the edges of all four body views, and it gives this bead a distinctive colour character that separates it from the more uniformly dark double wave pieces in the collection.

No cracks are present — my own independent finding from the photos. A faint surface irregularity is visible near the left end zone in the rotated view; this appears to be a minor surface mark or micro-pit, not structural damage, and is disclosed here for completeness.

The surface of the black ground has a fine, slightly open texture — not the high gloss seen on newer pieces — consistent with decades of age on a genuine vintage Taiwan bead.

The Double Wave Motif

The Double Wave, sometimes read in Tibetan and Chinese Buddhist traditions as two flowing rivers or as dual tiger teeth in motion, is among the most ancient of dzi compositions. It is associated with continuous, uninterrupted movement — the idea that fortune, like water, keeps flowing when nothing obstructs its path. The wave carries no destination of its own; it represents the sustained momentum that makes every other outcome possible. Wearers of the Double Wave dzi traditionally sought protection against stagnation — in business, in health, in relationships — and the pairing of two waves is understood to double that sustained, forward-moving force. On this bead, the motif's wraparound construction means that force has no single facing direction; it runs the full circumference, without beginning or end.
