Eight Eye Motif Dzi Bead with Bloodspots, 41.8×11.9mm, Two-Tone Agate (V-092924-8EBS)

Authenticity guaranteed — every piece hand-inspected and accurately described. All photos below are unretouched, taken against a plain white background to show this bead's true colour and condition.

Four eyes per face, eight in total — and the warm peachy-apricot at both ends is what you see first, before the ground deepens to very deep dark brown through the centre where the eyes sit.

This is a genuine vintage Taiwan dzi, produced in the 1980s and finished in high-quality natural agate. The two-zone ground is confirmed from flat-lit white-background photography: the drilled end caps carry a distinctly warm peachy-apricot tone — lighter and warmer than the honey-brown or cream ends seen in other pieces from this era — transitioning to very deep dark brown through the main body. The eight eyes are arranged four per face, in two horizontal rows of two, each framed by a cream-white eye ring. A cream horizontal stripe runs across the centre of each face between the two eye rows, and cream end bar stripes bracket both faces — a complete, symmetrically composed motif that reads clearly from every angle.

The eye rings vary slightly in sharpness and tonal warmth between individual positions, consistent with the handcrafted character of 1980s Taiwan production. Surface finish shows the texture of over four decades of age: the original gloss has softened, particularly on the dark ground areas, and there are minor surface marks along the equatorial line consistent with vintage wear — disclosed here as found. No cracks are visible in any of the white-background photos; this is my own finding from the images. The drill channel is cleanly executed at both ends, centered within the warm peachy-apricot end cap stone.

Bloodspots

The macro photograph documents cinnabar (硃砂, zhusha — mercuric sulfide) inclusions clearly within the eye ring zone. Warm orange-rust coloring is distributed throughout the cream ring, with a concentrated brownish-orange saturation in the pupil area and scattered orange-rust micro-dots visible across the cream field around it. The inclusions carry depth beneath the surface within the eye zone, giving the cream ring a suffused warmth that is not visible at normal viewing distance but becomes the dominant feature under magnification. Distribution pattern: cream-zone focused scattered. The eye ring zones show the densest and warmest concentration of cinnabar material documented in this macro.

The Eight Eye Motif

The Eight Eye motif is among the most sought-after dzi configurations in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, associated with success and achievement across all aspects of life. Eight is a number of particular significance in both Tibetan Buddhist cosmology and Chinese cultural numerology — widely linked to abundance, completion, and the opening of favorable conditions across every domain. A bead carrying eight eyes is traditionally believed to help its wearer overcome obstacles and progress in whatever they pursue, making it a piece associated with broad-spectrum good fortune rather than fortune tied to a single area. On a vintage piece with documented cinnabar inclusions and over four decades of accumulated character, the symbolic tradition of the motif sits alongside a physical history that the stone itself carries.
