Vintage Heaven & Earth Dzi, 37.1×13.2mm, very deep dark brown-black agate, 1980s Taiwan (V-071326-HE)

The two ends of this bead are not the same colour — one terminates in a pale cream-grey end cap, and the other ends in the same very deep dark brown-black that covers the rest of the body.

Images 5 and 6 show both. Image 5 shows the pale end: a cream-grey cap with the drill hole sitting cleanly at its centre, standing out sharply against the dark body behind it. Image 6 shows the opposite end: the dark ground continues to the tip without interruption, the drill hole centred in the same deep tone as the barrel. The asymmetry between them is not a flaw — it is a property of the original agate stone, where the cortex colour at one end happened to carry lighter material than at the other. No two handmade dzi beads share identical end caps, and this one makes the difference legible.

The ground on this bead is the deepest of the 1980s Taiwan group written this session. Images 1, 3, and 4 confirm a very deep dark brown-black, darker in character than its companion pieces V-071326-HE's warm brown and the companion three eye's bicolour layout. In certain flat-lit photographs it reads as close to true black; warmer undertones remain visible at the ends and at the edges of the motif zones under close examination.

The Heaven & Earth motif takes a more angular form on this bead than on the companion piece. Image 1 shows face A: a rounded-rectangular enclosed zone, its cream enclosing band forming a distinct near-square with soft corners, flanked by vertical cream bars. Image 3 shows the opposite face, where the same zone reads as a fuller teardrop — the barrel's curvature alters the shape at this rotation. Images 2 and 4 show the two connector faces: image 2 has a sharp X where the cream lines meet at a pointed centre; image 4 has a more flowing, S-curve version of the same connector — fluid where image 2 is angular. The two connector faces are not identical, and both are documentable in the photographs.

The cream zones carry the same naturally aged granular surface as the companion 1980s Taiwan pieces in this collection — settled, slightly matte, and visibly different from the fresh cream of a new Taiwan dzi.

The Heaven & Earth Motif

The Heaven & Earth dzi (天地珠) carries one of the most fundamental symbolic compositions in the dzi tradition: a single enclosed zone that represents the meeting point of sky and earth, celestial and terrestrial, the axis through which energy between the two realms passes. It is worn for harmony, balance, and alignment — for the sense that what happens above corresponds to what happens below, and that one's own circumstances move in accord with larger forces. Among 1980s Taiwan dzi, the Heaven & Earth is one of the most collected forms.
