From the side these two beads show waves — from the drill end they show arcs, the same lines reorganising into a completely different composition as each bead turns through ninety degrees.

These two vintage round dzi were made in Taiwan in the 1980s, each carrying the Double Wave motif across a fully spherical form. The wave bands wrap the entire surface of each bead — there is no single fixed face, no top or bottom, only the continuous composition of two undulating cream-pale bands against the dark ground that presents differently at every rotation. From the body-shot angles, the waves read as two parallel horizontal undulating lines running around the equator. From the drill-end angles, the same waves resolve into large sweeping arcs that divide each pole into curved segments of dark and pale. The composition is the same in both cases; the reading is entirely different.

The two beads share the double wave motif and the same 1980s Taiwan crafting tradition but carry distinct colour characters. Bead A (20.6×18.0mm) has a very deep dark brown ground that deepens toward near-black in its darkest zones, with wave bands in a slightly cooler cream-pale tone. The drill pole on Bead A is deep dark, approaching the darkest tone present anywhere on the piece. Bead B (20.4×17.4mm) carries a warmer dark brown ground — distinctly browner in character — with wave bands in a slightly warmer honey-cream tone. The drill pole on Bead B is dark brown rather than the deeper tone of Bead A's pole. Side by side the distinction is consistent: Bead A reads cooler and deeper; Bead B reads warmer throughout.

Both beads are in good condition. Fine age-consistent surface marks are present on both. The drill openings are small and clean. No chips or cracks observed from available photos.

The Double Wave Motif

The double wave dzi is associated with harmony and the continuous flow of positive energy — the two waves understood as the paired rhythms of yin and yang, of complementary forces that sustain each other through their alternation. In the Tibetan tradition the wave motif also connects to water and its qualities: adaptability, persistence, and the capacity to sustain life across all conditions. A pair of double wave beads amplifies this symbolism — two beads, each carrying two waves, create a set of four flowing elements that together express completeness and unobstructed movement in all directions.
