These two beads are almost perfectly round, and on a round form the double wave does something it cannot do on an elongated barrel — it wraps.
Every double wave dzi in this collection is an elongated barrel: At-052526-DW3 at 48.7mm, At-052526-DW4 at 47.4mm, At-072325-DW5 at 28.4mm, and the ancient Ac-082524-DWBS at 35.4mm. All four carry the wave horizontally across a long axis. This pair — V-060426-DWP — presents the same double wave motif on a near-spherical form, and the difference is fundamental. There is no long axis to anchor the composition. The honey-tan wave bands curve continuously over the surface of each bead, meeting at the drill hole on each end rather than terminating at a flat end cap. The wave does not travel from one point to another — it orbits.
Each bead shows two horizontal wave bands running across its equator, separated by a deep dark chocolate-brown centre band. Where the two waves meet at the sides of each bead, they pinch together to form the characteristic double wave diamond lozenge — the same geometric compression seen in At-052526-DW3, here condensed onto a spherical canvas. The upper wave crests upward and the lower wave troughs downward, the dark ground filling above and below. The drill hole faces (Images 4 and 5) reveal how the honey-tan bands sweep organically around the curve of each bead and converge at the hole — a composition that could only be read on a round form.
The motif lines are a warm honey-tan — golden in tone, distinctly warmer than the cream lines on the elongated double wave beads in the collection. Against the deep dark chocolate-brown ground they read as warm and luminous rather than high-contrast. The dark zones carry visible surface micro-crackle and age texture throughout — the characteristic surface character of vintage Taiwan dzi production from the 1980s, consistent with the known origin of this pair. Both beads are glossy overall with this fine surface texture giving them a lived quality distinct from new production.
The two beads are closely matched: 20.2mm × 17.6mm and 20.3mm × 17.3mm — nearly identical in profile, colour, and wave layout. Minor natural variation in wave line weight and dark zone distribution between the two is visible on close inspection and is expected in hand-etched pairs of this type. They were made together and read as a pair. The only other round vintage pair in the collection is V-052526-TVP — the Treasure Vase pair at 20.5mm × 17.4mm and 20.9mm × 18.1mm — which shares the same round form and Taiwan origin but carries a completely different motif and slightly deeper, cooler dark ground. This pair is the double wave equivalent: same era, same form, different symbolic register.
No bloodspots are present on either bead.
The Double Wave (雙波/Shuāng Bō) Motif
The double wave — known in Tibetan dzi tradition as a symbol of flowing life force, continuity, and the cyclical nature of existence — is among the most elemental of dzi motifs. Where eye beads count and accumulate, the wave simply moves. It has no beginning and no end on a circular form, which makes the round double wave bead a particularly complete expression of the motif's core meaning: the endless, self-renewing movement of energy through the world. In Tibetan belief, wave dzi are worn for harmony, flow, and the easing of obstacles — their fluid lines understood as a counterforce to stagnation and blockage. A matched pair amplifies this quality, the two beads understood as a balanced pair of forces in continuous motion.
