On this bead the cream-white ground is not the background — it is the dominant element, and the dark brown forms that carry the eyes and tiger tooth spots sit within it rather than the other way around.
This vintage round dzi from 1980s Taiwan carries the Three Eye Tiger Tooth motif across a fully spherical form. On a round bead the three eyes have no fixed position — each eye sits on its own section of the continuous surface, and the composition shifts at every rotation. From one angle a diamond-form eye appears clearly within the broad cream field, its dark brown ring and inner pupil reading as a crisp, distinct motif element. Turned to the next position, a second eye comes into view with tiger tooth spots distributed around it. From the drill-end angles, the cream and dark zones resolve into large sweeping areas of contrasting colour, the motif's individual elements giving way to the bead's overall tonal pattern as a whole.
The colour palette on this piece is unusually varied for a round Taiwan dzi. The cream-white ground is broad, bright, and dominant across all faces. Within and alongside this pale ground, warm dark brown and reddish-brown elements form the eyes and tiger tooth accents. A distinctive cool grey — with a slight green undertone — appears in zones around the drill poles and in certain body areas, adding a third tonal register between the cream and the warm brown. The drill openings carry a vivid warm reddish-orange tone at their centres, contrasting with the cool grey of the surrounding pole zones. All colour zones are documented from the white-background photographs — the grey is confirmed as a genuine cool grey, not a shadow artifact.
At 21.2×15.4mm this bead is notably oblate — wider than it is tall, a flatter round form that sits differently in the hand than a more spherical bead. Fine age-consistent surface marks are present. No chips or cracks observed from available photos.
The Three Eye Tiger Tooth Motif
The three eye dzi is associated with the wealth deity Kubera and the three realms of existence — said to draw abundance, good fortune, and the fulfilment of material wishes. The tiger tooth element adds a protective dimension: the markings reference the tiger's power as a guardian and subjugator of harmful forces. Together, the three eye tiger tooth motif pairs the energy of prosperity with the energy of protection — wish-fulfilment under the watch of the tiger's unobstructed gaze.
