Triple Vajra Motif, 45.4×11.8mm, dark brown & black agate (V-070526-3VjBS)

Three vajras run the length of this bead — but they don't all show themselves from the same angle. Rotate ninety degrees and the prongs that read as wing-arms on the front face become vertical posts; the diamond-lattice centre bars that anchor each dorje come in and out of view as the bead turns, so the motif is never fully resolved until the bead has made a complete rotation in the hand.
This is a genuine vintage Taiwan dzi bead from the 1980s. The motif is a triple vajra — three dorje/thunderbolt forms arranged in sequence along the length of the bead, each with the characteristic diamond centre-bar and flanking prongs of the Vajrayana ritual sceptre. The white motif lines are confident and well-defined, holding their crisp contrast against a ground that shifts between two distinct tones: warm dark brown across the lateral and end zones, deepening to pitch-black through the central body. This two-zone colour structure is visible across the rotation shots and gives the bead a dynamic quality that a uniformly dark ground would not.
At 45.4×11.8mm, this is a well-proportioned barrel with a slight asymmetry at the drill ends characteristic of genuine hand-production from this period. The warm grey-beige end caps confirm agate as the base material. A fine surface scratch is present on one face, visible in the photos and disclosed here; it is shallow and does not compromise the integrity of the bead.
The macro photographs document cinnabar bloodspot inclusions clearly. Warm reddish-orange to brick-red coloration is concentrated along the boundaries of the white motif lines and within the vajra-body zones, with denser saturation where the dorje prongs meet the central bar. These are naturally occurring cinnabar (硃砂/zhusha, mercuric sulfide) inclusions — valued in Tibetan tradition as evidence of the bead's living quality and authentic spiritual history.
The Triple Vajra Motif
The vajra — dorje in Tibetan — is the defining symbol of the Vajrayana tradition: indestructible, adamantine, the embodiment of awakened wisdom and the fierce capacity to sever delusion at its root. A single dorje represents this quality in one dimension; a triple vajra — three dorje forms held in sequence — extends that force across time and direction, invoking protection and clarity across past, present, and future, or across the three realms of existence: desire, form, and formlessness. To wear a triple vajra dzi is understood as an invitation for this tripled indestructible energy to accompany the practitioner through all conditions of life.
