Triple Vajra Motif, 42.8×12.1mm, cream & dark brown agate (At-070626-3VjBS)

On most dzi beads the ground is dark and the motif lines are white — on this one it is reversed. The cream zones occupy most of each face, and the three vajra forms sit within them as dark inlaid shapes. The warm reddish-orange cast that spreads across the cream is not the original colour of the stone: it is two to three centuries of cinnabar slowly diffusing through the agate.
This antique Tibetan dzi carries a triple vajra motif — three dorje/thunderbolt forms arranged in sequence around the circumference of the bead — worked in an inverse palette that sets it apart from nearly all other triple vajra dzi. The dominant colour is cream-white, with broad ivory bands running the full length of the bead on each face and the dark brown vajra-arm elements appearing as embedded forms within those zones rather than as etched lines on a dark ground. The visual effect is of three dorje forms held within the stone, rather than drawn across it.
At 42.8×12.1mm, this is a well-proportioned antique barrel with a gently tapered profile. Both drill-end caps are cream-white agate with small centred holes, high-gloss surface, and the natural agate character visible throughout the cream zones — confirming agate as the material without any ambiguity. Age-appropriate edge wear is present at the shoulder of one drill end, and a fine hairline is visible in that same zone in the macro photographs; both are disclosed here and visible in images 9 and 11. No structural cracks are observed in the unretouched photos.
The bloodspot documentation across images 9–12 reveals why the warm terracotta cast is so visually present even in the body shots: the cinnabar saturation in the cream zones is not localised to dots or clusters — it has diffused pervasively through the white banding across the full length of the bead, producing a warm reddish-orange blush that colours the entire cream register. Individual reddish-brown micro-dots are also visible within the saturation field in image 10. These are naturally occurring cinnabar (硃砂/zhusha, mercuric sulfide) inclusions — in a piece of this age, their extensive diffusion through the agate is both an authentication marker and a record of centuries of use and wear.
The Triple Vajra Motif
The vajra — dorje in Tibetan — is the defining implement of the Vajrayana tradition: indestructible, cutting through delusion as diamond cuts lesser materials, and embodying the fierce compassion of awakened mind in active form. A triple vajra extends this force across the three times — past, present, and future — and across the three realms of existence, inviting the protection and transformative capacity of the vajra to accompany the wearer without limit or direction. Where a single dorje focuses energy, the triple vajra multiplies and expands it, making this one of the most powerfully charged dzi motif forms in Tibetan tradition.
