The focal bead on this bracelet carries two different statements, and you can only read one at a time.

The Heaven and Earth dzi at the centre of this bracelet presents its two faces as a pair: one face carries the enclosed rectangular gate, the Earth element, bounded and structured, while the opposite face carries the open circular ring, the Heaven element, continuous and without corners. Neither face repeats the other. The focal bead is an elongated fusiform with a very deep dark warm brown ground and warm cream-beige etched motif lines, crafted from natural agate using the traditional dzi crafting technique.

The surrounding strand is 14 white bodhi root beads, opaque, smooth, rounded barrels in a clean bright white that contrasts strongly with the dark focal bead. They are consistent in size and shape, giving the bracelet an even rhythm on either side of the dzi. Gold-coloured metal spacers sit between the bodhi root beads, a warm metallic accent that echoes the cream-beige motif lines without competing with them. Dark dzi, bright white bodhi root, warm gold: high contrast and simply composed.

This bracelet differs from its companion, the Heaven and Earth Dzi Bracelet with black agate and turquoise, in its supporting beads: white bodhi root gives this one a cleaner, more minimal character and a brighter overall tone.

The Heaven and Earth Motif

The Heaven and Earth motif (天地天珠) represents the union of the celestial and the earthly: heaven above, earth below, and the life lived between them. The circular Heaven element is continuous, without beginning or end; the rectangular Earth gate is structured, defined and bounded. Together on one bead they express balance, and the Heaven and Earth dzi is especially prized for its associations with good fortune and the removal of obstacles.
