Turn this bead a quarter turn and the symbolism changes completely — a fully enclosed oval ring gives way to an open rectangular frame, heaven and earth rendered as two distinct geometric languages on opposite faces of the same stone.
Face A carries the rectangular earth gate: a cream-white frame with an open central window, set against a pitch-black ground confirmed under flat, white-background lighting. Face B carries the heaven element: a single fully enclosed oval ring, also rendered in cream-white against the same black field. Both motifs are bordered by a warm honey-tan to grey-brown end zone, visible at one end of the bead and consistent across both faces.
The ground colour is a true pitch-black, verified across multiple flat-lit photographs rather than assumed from a single angled shot. The cream-white motif lines carry a granular, slightly raised texture consistent with the bead's age, and the transition from black ground into the warm tan end zone is gradual rather than sharply delineated.
This piece shares its age, maker, and crafting style with three other antique pieces already in our collection — At-042626-4E3, At-060326-9E5, and At-061926-9E6BS — though it carries an entirely different motif from all three. Where those pieces are built around eye-count compositions, this bead pairs a single heaven ring with a single earth gate, read together as a single statement rather than a repeated count.
Bloodspots are confirmed at the highest tier of documentation we offer. Four macro and extreme close-up photographs in this set show dense rust-orange to reddish-brown cinnabar (硃砂/zhūshā, mercuric sulfide) speckling, concentrated most heavily along the boundary where the cream motif meets the black ground — visible as fine, granular surface-level inclusions rather than scattered isolated dots. The concentration is strongest at the gate-frame corners and along the cream field bordering the dark interior of the open gate window, with the speckling density dropping off somewhat in the broader cream zones away from those boundaries. This boundary-concentrated pattern is distinct from a pervasive, all-over saturation — the cinnabar here follows the architecture of the motif itself.
No cracks or medicine digs are visible in any photograph. Both end-cap drill openings are otherwise clean and consistent with the bead's stated age.
The Heaven & Earth Motif
In Tibetan dzi tradition, the Heaven and Earth motif represents the union of two complementary cosmic principles — the enclosed circle of heaven, complete and self-contained, paired with the open, structured frame of earth. Worn together on a single bead, the two are read not as opposites but as a single completed statement: the bead itself becomes the meeting point between them.
