Every other dzi in this collection — ancient, antique, Tibetan, Chinese — works in some variation of dark brown and cream. The contrast is always warm brown against pale white, or near-black against beige. This bead is different in a way that is immediately visible from across a room. The ground is jet-black: a deep, uniform, near-ebony tone with a high gloss finish that reflects light like polished lacquer. And the etched motif zones are not cream or white — they are golden amber. Warm, richly toned, somewhere between honey and old gold, the colour of agate that has aged slowly in a specific mineral environment over two to four centuries.

This is not a pigment or a treatment. It is the natural colour of the stone beneath the etched surface — the warm amber tone that was always present in this particular piece of agate, revealed by the craftsman's hand and then settled into by time. The contrast between the two zones — the jet black and the golden amber — is one of the most visually striking colour combinations in the dzi bead tradition and is found on a relatively small proportion of surviving antique pieces.

What the bead carries is the Heaven & Earth Motif. On Face A, the Heaven Gate presents as a large oval ring — the celestial opening — centred on the face and flanked by vertical bracket bars. On Face B, the Earth Gate answers with the characteristic rectangular bracket form, concave at the bottom, flat across the top: the bounded terrestrial field that receives what descends from above. The motif wraps the full circumference, the amber stripe rings visible from every angle as a continuous banding that makes the composition readable whether the bead is strung, held, or displayed.

The Heaven & Earth Motif carries the same fundamental meaning across both Tibetan and Chinese traditions: the alignment of yin and yang, the balance between celestial clarity and earthly groundedness. For practitioners of business, it is associated specifically with the removal of obstacles — the clearing of the path between intention and outcome, between what is sought above and what is achieved below.
