Ancient Etched Carnelian Eight-Cross Dzi Bead, 22.9 mm, Four-Sided Beveled, 500–1000 Years, (AC-100126-CM8)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

This bead is unlike anything else in the collection. It is not agate and it is not round. The stone is natural carnelian — warm red-orange and translucent where thin, deepening to rich reddish-brown where dense — and the form is a four-sided bevelled tube with flat faces, chamfered edges and a compact rectangular profile at 22.9mm.

Each of the four faces carries two cross motifs side by side, eight in all. The crosses are floriate: each arm is notched at its tip, with a four-pointed star-shaped space at the centre. They are drawn in a cream-white material that has built up heavily over the centuries into a thick, slightly raised layer sitting proud of the carnelian — the white decoration of the ancient craftsmen gradually becoming almost a mineral in its own right.

No two faces are identical. The crosses vary in the weight and completeness of the white, the notching of the arms and the size of the central star. One face shows a particularly well-preserved left cross with a crisp star centre; on another the white spreads more broadly, softening the arms at their edges. This is not damage but the natural result of each face ageing a little differently.

The carnelian is exceptional: warm translucent orange at the bevelled edges and drill ends, deepening to saturated reddish-brown in the centre, with the waxy glow of fine natural carnelian worn for centuries. The faceted form belongs to a distinct tradition within early Central and South Asian etched carnelian.

Etched Carnelian and the Cross Motif

Etched carnelian is one of the oldest decorated bead traditions in the world, reaching back to the Indus Valley civilisation and continuing through the early medieval period across Central Asia, Tibet and the Himalayan trade routes. These beads have been found from the Persian Gulf to the Tibetan plateau, travelling the same routes that carried carnelian and lapis lazuli into Tibet.

The cross has long carried protective and cosmological meaning. Its four equal arms point to the four directions and the four elements, extending protection across all of space. The floriate form here, with notched arms and a star centre, is a richer and more elaborate version of the simple cross.
