The two eyes on this bead sit on opposite faces, and the space between them is anything but empty. Each connecting face carries a bold cream line moving in a flowing zigzag across the dark ground, angular and organic at once, filling the face before the next eye comes into view. Look straight at one face and you see one eye; everything else keeps moving.

At 500 to 800 years old, this bead comes from the earlier centuries of the dzi tradition, and its surface shows it. The pitch-black body has a fine, granular, matte texture across every dark area — the original polish long since softened by age. The end caps are a warm tan, the agate's natural colour, distinctly lighter than the black body.

Each eye is generously sized for the bead's length: a cream-white outer ring, a concentric inner ring and a dark brown pupil, with a broad curve beside it. The zigzag connectors are drawn in bold, unhurried strokes that look more angular straight on and more wave-like from an angle. Both drill holes are small and clean.

The Two Eye Motif

The Two Eye dzi (二眼天珠) is one of the most fundamental forms in the Tibetan tradition. Its two eyes are often understood as wisdom and compassion, the paired qualities through which the awakened mind sees and responds to the world. It is associated with balance, harmonious relationships and protection across inner and outer life.
