Turn this bead a quarter turn and the colour changes completely — not the motif, the stone around it.

Most new dzi are built around a single ground colour. This one is cut from naturally banded multicolour agate — warm peach-orange, bright white and warm-to-dark brown all at once — and the three eyes sit within that shifting field. Turn it and the dominant colour moves from peach-orange to white to brown, while the dark brown eyes stay constant.

The form is a compact barrel, 26.2mm long and 9.8mm wide, with well-rounded ends and a high-gloss finish. Both end caps are a warm medium brown, with small centred drill holes (Images 5 and 6).

There is one eye on each of three faces. Each is a large, horizontally elongated lens shape — softer and more organic than a crisp circular ring — with a dark brown outer ring around a honey-tan interior and a small dark pupil. On Face A (Image 2) the eye sits on peach-orange; on Face B (Image 3) it sits on bright white, where it reads most clearly; in Image 4 the peach-orange widens and the white narrows. No two faces show the same colour relationship.

No cracks or chips are visible. This is a new bead, made within roughly the last 20 years using the traditional dzi crafting technique.

The Three Eye Motif

The Three Eye dzi (三眼天珠) is associated with the Three Stars — 福祿壽, happiness, prosperity and longevity — and with the attraction of abundance. Three is also a number of completeness in Tibetan Buddhism, recalling the Three Jewels (the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha) and the three times of past, present and future.
