On a round bead the treasure vase has no fixed position. Hold these beads by the drill axis and the vase reads clearly — neck and rim rising toward the drill hole, the swelling body below, scrollwork curling out from the sides. Turn either bead a quarter and the design dissolves into abstract curves before the next face brings the vase back. Every angle shows a different part of the same motif.

The two beads share the motif, the 1980s Taiwan origin and a dark brown ground, but differ in tone. The left bead is a deep, even chocolate-brown with bright, cool cream-white lines and strong contrast. The right bead's dark areas lean warmer and slightly reddish, and its lines read as a warmer cream. The small difference only makes the pairing stronger.

The vase wraps the full circumference of each bead, its complete form — neck, rim, body, base and scrollwork — clear from the main face, with the scrollwork taking over from the other side. Both drill holes on each bead are small and clean. No cracks or chips.

These are vintage beads, made in Taiwan in the 1980s using the traditional dzi crafting technique.

The Treasure Vase Motif

The treasure vase (寶瓶, bumpa) is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Tibetan Buddhism. On dzi it represents inexhaustible wealth, abundance and the fulfilment of wishes — a vessel holding prosperity, health, long life and spiritual attainment that never empties, however much is drawn from it. On a round bead the vase wraps the whole sphere, its abundance reaching in every direction.
