We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.
The four eyes on this bead are not simply round. Each sits inside a square, and the square is part of the eye.
On a standard eye dzi, the ring floats on the dark ground with nothing around it. Here each eye is enclosed in a cream-white square frame between the stripe bands, with the ring inside the square: outer square, dark field, inner cream ring, warm honey-brown pupil. The close-ups (Images 9, 10 and 11) show this structure in detail, and show that the frames are not identical — on Face A the left pair has slightly softer corners and the right pair slightly sharper ones, the natural variation of hand-made decoration.
Face A is the main eye face: two square-framed eyes in the centre, flanked by paired vertical cream-white stripe bands running toward the tapered ends. The end caps are a warm honey-brown to sandy-tan, the natural agate colour at the tips. The drill holes are small, round and well centred (Images 7, 8 and 11).
Face B, turned 90°, carries a completely different design: an interlocking S-curve meander in cream-white across the dark brown ground, a key-fret pattern that fills the face between the stripe bands. Along its edges the square frames of the Face A eyes wrap over, showing the design continues all the way around. Where Face A is bounded and centred, Face B is continuous and flowing.
The ground is a deep, warm chocolate-brown rather than pitch-black, its warmth visible at the motif edges and toward the end caps. The cream-white lines have a slightly warm, sandy edge. The surface is semi-gloss with fine age texture visible in close-up. One small surface pit or weathering mark sits between the two Face A eyes (Image 10). No chips, cracks or medicine digs. No bloodspots.
Compared with the Antique Four Eye Dzi (At-042626-4E3), which also has square-framed eyes but on a pitch-black ground with bloodspots, this bead is warm brown, centuries older, and carries the meander on its connecting face. It is the oldest four eye in our collection.
The Four Eye Motif
The Four Eye dzi (四眼天珠) is one of the most protective designs in the dzi tradition. Its four eyes correspond to the four directions and to the four immeasurables of Buddhist teaching: loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity. A four eye bead watches in every direction at once. It is traditionally worn for protection in travel and times of change, and to remove obstacles to progress. The square frames add another layer: the square symbolises the earth, stability and clarity — eyes that see with precision and focus.
