We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.
You cannot see all five eyes at once.
Two are on one face — set within a rectangular cream frame with notched corners, paired side by side, each with its own dark pupil, the frame around them reading as a window or threshold, a contained space that announces the eyes before you reach them. Rotate the bead one hundred and eighty degrees to the opposite face: three more eyes appear, arranged in a horizontal row and connected above by a continuous cream arc that links all three like a colonnade. Two plus three equals five — but the five never appear together. The bead must be turned. Kubera's eyes watch in different directions from the same stone.
The two remaining faces — the sides between the eye faces — carry the wave motif. Face B presents three rows of cream zigzag and wave lines running the full length of the bead, dense and rhythmic, the cream lines sharp against the pitch-black ground. Face D carries a transitional composition: partial eye rings from Face C visible at the top edge, two rows of wave lines below, the bead caught mid-rotation between its two symbolic registers. No face on this bead is compositionally neutral. Every rotation presents a fully resolved or compositionally interesting reading.
The ground is pitch black — the deepest, most consistent dark field in this collection, absorbing light completely and giving the cream motif lines extraordinary contrast. Against pitch black, the cream reads not as off-white but as bright — the wave lines on Face B have an almost glowing quality, the eye rings on Faces A and C read as clear and precise as if freshly etched. The end caps are a warm honey-tan — a distinctive warm caramel agate tone visible in Images 5 and 6 — creating a colour transition at each tip from the pitch-black body to the warm cap that frames the bead's length.
At 44.5mm × 12.4mm the body is a full torpedo — wider than many of the antique beads in this collection, the diameter giving the eye rings room to be generous in scale. The two eyes on Face A sit within their rectangular frame with enough space that the frame itself reads as a significant design element, not just a border. The three eyes on Face C are connected by their continuous arc into a single unified composition. Both are resolved and distinct. Both reward close attention.
The Five Eye Motif is associated with Kuvera (also written Kubera) — the Buddhist and Hindu God of Wealth, one of the Four Heavenly Kings, guardian of the north. The five eyes of the bead correspond to Kuvera's domain across five directions, bringing the wearer endless good fortune, longevity, and happiness. Among dzi collectors in Asia, the five eye bead is worn by those for whom abundance and long life are the primary intentions — it is the wealth bead that also promises duration.
This bead is estimated to be 300 to 500 years old. No cracks. Natural weathering marks and minor digs throughout, consistent with a piece of this age. No bloodspots. One bead. One owner.
