The motif on this bead does not read as a pattern. It reads as a structure, a framework of rails and crossbars dividing the carnelian into a series of rectangular windows.
That distinction matters. Most dzi motifs work through line and curve: a wave, a circle, a chevron. The rail track works through compartments: two horizontal rails along the central band, connected by vertical crossbars that create distinct rectangular cells. On any of the four main octagonal faces, you are looking through a lattice, with the warm terracotta-red carnelian visible inside each framed cell. The etching is a cool silver-grey, its texture rough and irregular from long surface weathering.
The bead's form sets it apart. Where the Ancient Five Tiger Stripe Carnelian Dzi with Calcification carries its motif on a rounded body, this bead is truly octagonal in cross-section: eight distinct flat faces. Four carry the rail track band; the four narrower faces between them show plain carnelian. In the angled views (Images 6–7), the facets are clearly visible as separate planes, and the taper toward each pointed end is cleanly geometric.
The carnelian is a vivid warm terracotta-red, consistent across all faces. The surface carries a high-gloss polish, with sharp, even reflections showing the stone was worked to a high standard and has kept that surface. The end caps are the same warm terracotta-red, with a dark grey-black border band just before each tapered end, a deliberate design element framing the motif.
The drill holes (Images 6–7) are small, round, and cleanly centred, with no fraying or modern damage. The 500–1,000 year estimate places this bead alongside the Ancient Double Diamond Eye-in-Eye Carnelian Dzi, and its motif, octagonal form and surface are consistent with that range.
The Rail Track Motif
The four rail track motif (鐵軌紋) is among the most architecturally precise compositions in the carnelian dzi tradition. The parallel rails running the length of the bead symbolise continuous forward movement, a path without end. The rectangular compartments are read as stations along that path, milestones each passed and followed by the next. The motif is associated with career advancement, sustained success, and wealth built through steady effort. Read more in Carnelian Dzi Beads: The Pema Raka Guide.
