This bead puts two eyes on every face. Turn it to any angle and a pair of eyes is looking back at you — each enclosed in a cream almond frame that sharpens to a point at both ends, the two eyes in each pair flanking a central vertical cream divider, the whole composition repeating without interruption around the full circumference. There is no connector face on this bead, no plain zone, no rest — just eight eyes arranged so that the bead is never turned away from you.

The eye frame on each of the eight eyes is the defining visual feature of this piece. Rather than the simple concentric ring seen on most eye dzi, each eye here is enclosed in an almond-shaped or lozenge surround — a pointed oval of cream that elongates the eye form and gives it a more dramatic, watchful character. The pupils at the centre of each are small and round, set within a cream inner ring, the whole composition reading as a row of observant eyes regardless of which way the bead is oriented. Between the paired eyes on each face, cream X-form connector elements cross the dark ground, linking the pairs in a continuous geometric network that holds the full circumference together as a single unified composition.

The ground is a deep, warm dark brown — confirmed from the flat-lit white-background photographs as a genuine dark brown throughout, not pitch-black. The warmth in the dark zones distinguishes this bead clearly from pieces with a cooler, deeper black ground, and gives the cream motif lines a slightly softer contrast that reads as aged and settled rather than stark. The end caps at both drill tips are a warm tan-beige — agate-internal colour — distinctly lighter than the dark brown body. The surface across the dark zones carries a fine semi-matte texture consistent with three to five centuries of natural surface transformation. No cracks or chips observed.

The Eight Eye (གཞུང་མིག་བརྒྱད) Motif

Eight is among the most significant numbers in Tibetan Buddhist tradition — the eight eyes of this dzi correspond to the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism (the Ashtamangala): the parasol of protection, the golden fish of abundance, the treasure vase of fulfilment, the lotus of purity, the conch of proclamation, the endless knot of interdependence, the victory banner of accomplishment, and the dharma wheel of teaching. A bead carrying eight eyes is understood as bringing the wearer under the blessing and protection of all eight simultaneously. It is also associated with staying on the correct dharma path — the eight eyes as eight directions of awareness, watching over the practitioner from every angle. On this bead, with two eyes distributed to each of the four faces, that protection is literally omnidirectional: there is no side of this bead that does not carry a pair of watching eyes.
