The connector faces on this bead do not form an X — they form a pair of arcs, one above and one below, curving toward each other across a dark centre without meeting.
Image 2 shows one connector face: a cream arc in the upper zone, another below it, both curving inward with a deep dark ground between them. The composition has an organic, almost parenthetical quality — more flowing than the angular X-crossing seen on Taiwan Heaven & Earth dzi. Image 4 shows the opposite connector face, where the composition shifts again: the upper element becomes more of a bracket, the lower arc more open, the relationship between the two zones asymmetric in a way that image 2 is not. The two connector faces read differently, and both differ from the static symmetry of a standard X.
Image 1 shows the primary face: a large, well-formed oval enclosed by a cream band, horizontally centred between two vertical cream stripe bars. The ground is very deep dark brown — the owner confirms brown, not black, and the flat-lit images bear that out, with the dark zones carrying visible warmth that true pitch-black would not. Image 3 shows the opposite primary face, where the same oval closes into a more angular, trapezoidal reading as the barrel's curvature alters the visible shape at this rotation. The cream zones on face C carry the most pronounced honey-warmth in the patina — the broader bar sections on this face read as distinctly warm cream rather than the cooler cream of the central oval zone.
Images 5 and 6 show the two drill-hole ends. Both are small, clean, and centred in warm brown-grey end caps. The two ends are not quite identical — the right end (image 5) carries a marginally sharper taper; the left end (image 6) is marginally more rounded. Both hold the drill hole cleanly without damage to the end cap.
The cream zones throughout carry the fine granular surface texture of aged agate — the settled, matte quality that develops over two centuries or more. No new Taiwan dzi, however well-made, carries this texture in its cream zones.
The Heaven & Earth Motif
The Heaven & Earth dzi (天地珠) encodes one of the most fundamental relationships in Tibetan cosmology: the axis between the celestial and terrestrial realms, the point of contact between what is above and what is below. The enclosed oval represents that meeting — a space where the two realms converge. Worn for harmony, balance, and alignment, it is among the most widely recognised dzi motifs across Tibetan, Himalayan, and Chinese collecting traditions. At 200–400 years of age, this piece has carried that meaning across multiple generations.
