The motif on this bead does not announce itself — you have to turn it to find each part.
One face carries an eye. Rotate ninety degrees and the tiger tooth crosses appear — two diagonal lines forming an X with flanking bars, the tasso element that recurs across the oldest carnelian dzi in this tradition. Rotate again and the second eye opens: a deep concentric spiral with a red-orange centre where the carnelian's own colour bleeds through the pale etching. The fourth face resolves into the heaven gate structure — a framed rectangular form that completes the compositional cycle. No single angle shows the whole bead. Each rotation reveals a different element of a motif that only makes sense when the bead has been turned all the way around.
The stone is carnelian throughout — warm translucent orange, vivid and consistent from the body to both drill ends, with no colour shift or banding zone. The etching reads as pale peach-cream against the orange ground, the contrast gentler than the white-on-black of agate dzi but no less precise in its geometry. What makes the motif lines visually distinctive at this age is their surface character: the etched zones are heavily crystallised, rough and granular to the touch, the mineral alteration of five to ten centuries having transformed the original bleached lines into a deeply textured surface that is one of the clearest authentication signals ancient carnelian dzi can carry.
The form is a compact barrel, slightly asymmetric between the two drill ends — one tapers more gradually than the other — consistent with the hand-shaping of ancient carnelian pieces of this period. No cracks and no chips are visible in any photo. I independently confirm both.
The Two Eye, Heaven Gate & Tiger Tooth Motif
This bead combines three of the oldest motif elements in the carnelian dzi tradition. The two eyes (二眼) carry the foundational protective significance of the eye motif — awareness, deflection of negative forces, and the gaze of compassionate protection. The heaven gate (天門) element opens a threshold between the earthly and celestial realms, inviting auspicious influence to descend. The tiger tooth (虎牙/達索) — the crossed diagonal or V-form associated with the tiger's canine — is a power symbol carried across the Himalayan and Central Asian traditions, associated with strength, courage, and the warding of malevolent energies. Together on a single bead, these three elements form a layered protective composition that addresses protection, celestial connection, and active strength simultaneously.
