Of the three new Nine Eye dzi in this series, this one carries the lightest ground and the softest read, and that difference changes everything about how the motif lands.

Where the grey-black Nine Eye carries a deep cool grey-black ground and the dark warm brown Nine Eye a very deep warm brown, this piece has a medium-dark warm brown ground noticeably lighter than either. The warm brown of the agate comes through strongly, with natural banding visible across the body in all three face photographs, the ground shifting from a richer brown in some zones to a lighter honey-brown in others. It is a ground that shows its stone.

The motif lines are a soft warm sandy-cream, lower in contrast against this lighter ground than its siblings, giving the nine eye composition a quieter, more muted character. The honey-brown warmth of the ground blends gently into the etched zones, so that the eye interiors and connecting curves carry a warm brownish tinge rather than a clean dark pupil. The motif is fully legible, nine open C-ring eyes connected by flowing curved lines, three per face, divided by vertical bars, but it reads softly rather than sharply.

The surface is matte throughout, the most uniformly matte of the three. Neither the ground nor the etched zones carry gloss, so the light sits on the surface rather than reflecting from it.

The form is an elongated fusiform, 58.6mm long and 12.9mm in diameter, the longest of the three, with an even, symmetrical taper that closes gradually at both ends. Images 5 and 6 show each end tapering gently to a rounded dark brown tip with a small centred drill hole. This is the most classically spindle-shaped of the three.

The three face views (Images 2, 3 and 4) each present the composition with slight variations. Several minor surface marks from crafting are visible at close range in Images 3 and 4, none structural.

This bead is newly crafted within the last twenty years from natural agate using the traditional dzi crafting technique. It is not an antique or ancient bead. No cracks or chips are visible in any photograph.

The Nine Eye Motif

The Nine Eye motif (九眼天珠) is known in Tibetan tradition as the King of All Dzi. It is associated with merit, wealth and good fortune, and protection for the wearer across all areas of life.
