Antique Tibetan Nine Eye Motif Dzi Bead, 54.0mm × 12.3mm, Warm Brown Agate (At-011625-9E)

📷 We never retouch our photos. Every bead is photographed exactly as it is. What you see is what you receive.

There is no point on this bead where an eye ends and a connector begins. The cream line that forms the top of one circle continues directly into the horizontal bar that connects to the next, which curves into the side of another, which flows downward into a fourth. The nine eyes on this bead are not nine separate elements placed on a surface. They are one continuous cream network — a single unbroken path that loops and steps and curves its way across the full circumference of the bead, forming nine circles along the way. You can trace the line from any eye and arrive at every other.

This matters because it is what separates a well-made nine-eye bead from a mediocre one. On lesser pieces, the eyes and connectors are drawn as separate elements that merely touch. On this bead, the network is integrated — the geometry holds together as a system. At 54.0mm × 12.3mm, it is the longest bead in this collection, and that length gives the nine-eye layout the room it needs to fully express itself without the crowding that can occur on shorter pieces.

The Nine Eye Motif is the most powerful and most sought-after in the entire dzi tradition. In Tibetan Buddhist cosmology, the number nine represents completeness — the fullest possible expression of accumulated merit and protective energy. The nine-eye dzi is sometimes called the King of all Motifs. Businesspeople across Asia have historically considered it the single most auspicious dzi to own, associating it with the summoning of wealth, the removal of obstacles across all nine categories of human fortune, and protection across all dimensions of life. It is not a collector's motif. It is a practitioner's bead.

The palette on this piece is distinctly warmer than many nine-eye beads. The ground is a rich deep chocolate-brown — not the near-black of the Heaven & Earth beads in this collection, but a genuine warm brown with visible tonal depth. The cream motif lines carry a slight honey warmth rather than a stark white. The end caps — visible in the angled photographs — are smooth, polished warm amber-brown agate with small centred drill holes. Under close inspection, the surface across all faces shows the fine micro-pitting and weathering marks consistent with genuine age: not dramatic, not decorative, simply the quiet evidence of two to four centuries of existence.

This bead is estimated to be 200 to 400 years old. Material is high-quality natural agate. Condition is excellent — no cracks. Natural weathering marks present throughout.
