Antique Nine Eye Dzi Bead, 59.0mm × 13.2mm, Amber Motif on Dark Agate (At-012325-9E4)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

Nine eyes on a ground this dark, in lines this warm — the motif does not announce itself. It emerges.

At a distance, this bead reads as almost entirely dark. The ground is a deep, dense dark brown — darker than most of the antique beads in this collection, absorbing light rather than reflecting it. Step closer and the nine amber rings begin to materialise out of the field, one by one, warm orange-brown against the deep ground, glowing in a way that cream-on-dark never does. Cream announces itself immediately. Amber requires proximity. The nine eyes on this bead reward the person who looks closely.

This amber palette is not a manufacturing variant or a lesser version of the standard etching — it is the agate speaking in its own register. The specific iron content of this stone, its particular mineralogy, produced warm amber-orange where another piece would have produced white. The same palette appears on the Four Eye bead At-012325-4E also in this collection, suggesting a shared agate source or production period. Both beads were photographed on the same date; both carry the same distinctive amber-on-dark visual identity. On the Four Eye bead the effect is striking. On the Nine Eye bead, with nine rings distributed across 59.0mm of length, it becomes something else — a bead that seems to hold its own internal light, the nine rings glowing at intervals along the full torpedo body.

At 59.0mm long and 13.2mm in diameter, this is the largest nine eye bead in this collection. All four nine eye beads are documented below for direct comparison:

  • At-011625-9E — 54.0mm × 12.3mm, warm brown ground, standard cream motif
  • At-051525-9E2 — 54.9mm × 12.3mm, aged surface, cream motif
  • At-083025-9E3 — 53.7mm × 12.1mm, smooth warm brown, cream motif
  • At-012325-9E4 — 59.0mm × 13.2mm, deep dark ground, amber motif — this bead

The nine eyes are arranged in the standard linear sequence across the bead's length, flanked by connecting stripe elements, the composition running end-to-end along the full 59mm face. Both end caps carry the same deep dark brown of the ground. Both drill holes are intact and well-centred. The surface carries natural weathering marks consistent with a bead estimated to be 100 to 200 years old. No cracks. No bloodspots.

The Nine Eye Motif is documented across Tibetan dzi tradition as the most powerful of all dzi motifs — the King of motifs — associated with wealth accumulation, protection from harm, and the amplification of the wearer's field across all nine directions simultaneously. It is the preferred motif of businesspeople throughout Asia, worn by those for whom the stakes are highest and the intention is abundance without ceiling.

Among the four nine eye beads in this collection, this is the one that makes you look twice. The amber is not what you expect, and it does not let go once you have seen it.
