Ancient Twenty Stars Carnelian Dzi, 22.8mm × 10.0mm, warm orange-brown octagonal barrel (Ac-030625-20S)

We never retouch our photos. What you see is exactly what you will receive.

The stars on this bead are not linear — they do not follow a single row. They wrap the entire octagon, appearing on every face including the narrow transitional edges, so that no matter how you hold the bead, a star is always facing you.

That quality of uninterrupted presence across all eight faces is what the twenty stars motif achieves on an octagonal body. Each primary flat face carries a horizontal band framed by parallel rail lines (upper and lower) with vertical end-connectors forming a complete rectangular frame, and within that frame sits a row of solid circular star dots — not ring eyes, not diamond forms, but clean, filled circles in warm off-white to pale sandy-cream, each one distinct and evenly spaced. The narrow transitional faces between the primary flat faces also carry star dots, which is how the count of twenty is reached and why the motif reads as continuous as the bead rotates. This all-face distribution makes this bead compositionally different from any other star-bearing carnelian in this collection: where Ac-122224-TSS carries the star motif only at the poles of a sphere in combination with tiger stripe, this bead dedicates its entire surface to stars alone — twenty of them, framed and distributed with intention.

The carnelian ground on this bead is the most colour-varied of all the ancient carnelians in this collection. Looking across the six photographs, you encounter warm orange-brown on the primary body faces, a natural dark reddish-brown to near-black zone at one end of the bead (a geological colour concentration within the stone itself, visible in Images 2–5 on the left), and vivid warm orange-red at both tapered end caps (Images 6–7) — the brightest, most saturated orange in any carnelian bead photographed here. This variation is not inconsistency: it is the natural banding of high-quality carnelian, preserved across all faces by the matte-satin surface that shows no significant polishing loss or artificial treatment of the ground colour. At 22.8mm × 10.0mm, this is also the narrowest-diameter carnelian bead in the collection — an unusually elongated, slender proportion for the octagonal form that gives it a distinctly different presence in hand than the wider-bodied octagonal beads.

The drill holes (Images 6–7) are the most significantly weathered bore openings of any carnelian bead in this collection. Both ends show large funnel-form bores — wider at the opening than at the centre — with heavily roughened and chipped edges consistent with ancient hand-drilling without mechanical tools, at the older end of the 500–1,000 year age estimate. This contrasts with the cleaner, smaller bores of Ac-010825-16EW and Ac-050725-LKBS, placing this bead's physical evidence for age at the higher end of the range.

The Twenty Stars Motif

The stars motif (星紋 / xīng wén) in carnelian dzi tradition represents celestial guidance — the idea that the wearer moves through life under the watchful attention of the heavens, each star a point of light ensuring the path ahead is visible. Twenty stars carry the accumulated meaning of that guidance across a complete and abundant count: in Chinese numerological tradition, twenty (二十 / èrshí) is two tens — a doubled completeness, a number associated with the full realisation of potential across both earthly and heavenly dimensions. A bead that carries twenty stars is understood as a fully-armoured piece of celestial protection.
