Ancient Links Motif Carnelian Dzi with Bloodspots, 25.7mm × 11.2mm, terracotta-red, octagonal (Ac-050725-LKBS)

The bloodspot inclusions on this bead do not sit on the surface — they sit inside the stone, circular and deliberate, visible through the carnelian as if pressed into the material from within before it hardened.

The close-up hand-held photograph (Image 7) is the most important image in this listing. It shows the lower carnelian zone between the links motif band and the lower stripe terminator in direct light, and within that zone, a distinct cluster of approximately four to five circular cinnabar inclusions — bloodspots (硃砂 / zhūshā, mercuric sulfide) — sitting as sub-surface dot formations within the warm terracotta-red carnelian. Two to three smaller inclusions are visible above the links band. These are not surface deposits and not damage: they are naturally occurring cinnabar mineralisation within the stone, present at the time the carnelian was formed, their reddish-brown tone reading slightly darker than the surrounding terracotta-red ground. The circular, discrete form of each inclusion — approximately 1–2mm in apparent diameter — is consistent with classic bloodspot morphology in authenticated ancient carnelian dzi.

The ground colour of this bead is what separates it immediately from Ac-032425-LK, the other links bead in this collection. Where that bead carries a deeply treated chocolate-brown to charcoal ground with heavy surface mineral deposits and a high-gloss finish, this bead's carnelian is warm, vivid terracotta-red throughout, with a matte-satin surface that reads as aged and naturally worn rather than polished. The treatment here was lighter — the carnelian's own colour dominates, and the motif lines sit as warm sandy-cream to pale gold-tan against that warm ground, creating a distinctly different colour temperature from the cool silver-grey or bright white motif lines of the other carnelian beads in this collection.

The links motif itself — three to four interlocking ovoid chain links running as a central horizontal band — is framed at each end by vertical stripe terminators: white-cream bands crossing the full bead width at the boundaries of the motif zone. This framing element is not present on Ac-032425-LK and gives this bead a more architecturally composed appearance, the links contained within a defined field rather than running to the body edges. From Face B (Image 3), the octagonal cross-section is most clearly readable — sharp angular transitions between the flat faces, the geometry precise even after centuries of wear. A fine surface crack runs longitudinally across the upper portion of Face B, a natural feature consistent with the age range.

Two pinholes are present on this bead, visible in Image 7 as small open surface indentations within the motif zone — distinct from the bloodspot inclusions, which are sub-surface. These are disclosed here in full and are visible in the unretouched photographs. They do not affect the structural integrity of the bead. The drill holes at both ends (Images 5–6) are small, circular, and cleanly finished into warm carnelian end caps — the same terracotta-red as the body, with no dark border trim, unlike the rail track bead Ac-010825-4RT.

The Links Motif

The links motif (鏈環紋 / liàn huán wén), also known as the coins or chain motif, symbolises unbroken prosperity — a continuous sequence of wealth and connection in which each ring of fortune enables the next. In carnelian dzi tradition, the presence of natural bloodspot inclusions (cinnabar / 硃砂) within a links bead is considered doubly auspicious: the chain motif invites ongoing abundance, while the cinnabar inclusions — red mercuric sulfide crystals formed within the stone over geological time — are understood as natural seals of authenticity and protective power, their presence distinguishing a bead as one the earth itself has marked.
