Two Eye Motif, 35.8×11.8mm, Pitch-Black & Tan Agate, Ancient (Ac-073026-2E)
🪨 Genuine agate. Unretouched photos. What you see is what ships.
The two eyes on this bead sit on opposite faces and the space between them is not empty — each connector face carries a bold cream line that moves in a flowing zigzag across the dark ground, angular and organic at once, filling the full width of the face before the next eye comes into view. Holding the bead still and looking straight at one face gives you one eye. Everything else keeps moving.
At 500 to 800 years of age, this is a piece from the earlier centuries of the dzi tradition, and the surface carries that history directly. The dark body zones throughout — confirmed as pitch-black from the flat-lit white-background photographs — have developed a pervasive fine granular texture across their surface: a matte crystallisation that has formed within the agate matrix over centuries, replacing the original polish with a mineral character that can only accumulate with genuine age. This age-consistent surface crystallisation is one of the most reliable markers of an authentic ancient piece, and on this bead it is visible across every dark zone in every photograph. The end caps at both tips are a warm tan tone — the agate's internal colour at the drill points — distinctly lighter than the pitch-black central body.
Each eye is generously proportioned for a bead of this length: a cream-white outer ring, a concentric inner ring, and a dark brown pupil at the centre, with a broad curve element accompanying the eye on its face. The connector faces between them carry the zigzag cream line in bold, unhurried strokes that read differently at each angle — more angular when viewed straight on, more wave-like from a turned position. Both drill holes are small and clean.
This bead is the first of a companion pair — its matching piece is listed separately and cross-linked below.
The Two Eye (གཞུང་མིག) Motif
The two-eye dzi is among the most foundational forms in the Tibetan dzi tradition, its two circles of awareness understood as the paired qualities of wisdom and compassion — the two eyes through which enlightened mind perceives and responds to the world. In Tibetan Buddhist and Bön contexts the two eyes are associated with balance, harmonious relationship, and the protection of the wearer across the paired dimensions of inner and outer life. A two-eye dzi of genuine ancient age — at five to eight centuries old — carries not only the symbolic weight of the motif but the accumulated energy of the centuries it has passed through.
