Five Eye Motif, 39.8×13.2mm, Dark Brown Agate, Two Blue-Tint Eyes (At-072326-5E)
🪨 Genuine agate. Unretouched photos. What you see is what ships.
Three of the five eyes on this bead are warm cream. Two of them are not — they carry a distinct blue-white tint, cooler and brighter than their companions, visible on the opposing face where the two eyes sit paired beneath a broad arching connector. The five eyes share the same form and the same dark brown ground, but they are not the same colour, and the difference is clear in every photograph.
The five eyes distribute across two faces in a 3+2 arrangement. The primary face carries three eyes in a horizontal row — concentric cream rings with dark brown pupils, evenly spaced across the dark ground, the cream rings showing the warm tone typical of this bead's agate character. Rotate the bead 180° and the opposite face presents the remaining two eyes: a cooler, blue-white pair set side by side beneath a broad cream arch that curves above them and connects the two eye zones into a single unified composition. The blue-white character of these two rings is a natural variation within the agate stone itself — not a treatment or an anomaly, but a colour difference preserved in the etching as the cream zones resolved differently across the two halves of the bead.
Between the eye faces, the two connector faces carry flowing undulating cream wave lines — two parallel curves moving across the dark brown ground in the same organic, unhurried pattern on both sides. The wave elements are the same on both connector faces, giving the full circumference of the bead a consistent rhythm: eyes, waves, eyes, waves.
The ground is confirmed from the white-background photographs as a deep, warm dark brown throughout the body — a rich tone that intensifies toward the centre of the bead and transitions to warm orange-tan at both drill ends, which is agate-internal colour for this piece. No single zone of this bead reads as pitch-black: the dark ground throughout is a genuine dark brown.
Condition is good for a piece of this age. No cracks or chips observed. The surface carries a natural character consistent with antique agate at this age range.
The Five Eye (གཞུང་མིག་ལྔ) Motif
The five-eye dzi is one of the most powerful and sought-after forms in the Tibetan dzi tradition. Five eyes are associated in Tibetan Buddhist and Bön cosmology with the five Dhyani Buddhas — the five aspects of enlightened mind that together constitute complete awakening: Vairochana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha, and Amoghasiddhi — and with the five elements, the five wisdoms, and the five directions of space. Wearing the five-eye dzi is understood as bringing the wearer under the protection of all five buddha families simultaneously, with each eye representing a different quality of liberated awareness. The bead is considered especially auspicious for those engaged in serious spiritual practice, and is among the most collected of all dzi forms.
