Three of the five eyes on this bead are warm cream. The other two are not: they carry a distinct blue-white tint, cooler and brighter than the rest, on the face where the pair sits beneath a broad arching connector. Same form, same dark brown ground, different colour — and the difference is clear in every photograph.

The eyes are arranged three and two. The main face carries three in a row — concentric cream rings with dark brown pupils, evenly spaced. Turn the bead over and the remaining two appear side by side beneath a cream arch that links them into one composition. Their blue-white tone is natural variation within the agate, not a treatment.

The two connecting faces carry flowing cream wave lines — two parallel curves moving unhurriedly across the dark ground — giving the bead a steady rhythm all the way round: eyes, waves, eyes, waves.

The ground is a deep, warm dark brown throughout, richest at the centre and warming to orange-tan at both drill ends, the natural colour of the agate. No part reads as pitch-black.

Condition is good for its age, with no cracks or chips and a natural antique surface.

The Five Eye Motif

The Five Eye dzi (五眼天珠) is one of the most sought-after designs in the Tibetan tradition. Five eyes are associated with the five Dhyani Buddhas — Vairochana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha and Amoghasiddhi — and with the five elements, five wisdoms and five directions. Wearing a five eye dzi is understood to place the wearer under the protection of all five Buddha families, each eye representing a different quality of awakened awareness. It is considered especially auspicious for those devoted to spiritual practice.
