🏛️ Ancient Dzi Shop specialises in authentic ancient and antique Tibetan dzi beads. Every piece is sold with unretouched photographs and honest condition disclosure.
The motif on this bead moves — and what lives inside the cream zones moves too.
On Face A, a single continuous white line curves, hooks, and loops across a pitch-black ground in a composition that flows rather than repeats. It is not a geometric motif. It reads as a figure in motion — a scroll with its own rhythm, flanked by clean vertical stripe borders at both ends. Turn to Face B and the composition shifts entirely: two parallel wave lines run the length of the face with a pitch-black band dividing them, quiet and horizontal where Face A was dynamic and curling. The two faces are not mirror images in any sense — they are deliberately different in character, and the bead rewards being turned.
What unites the faces is the pitch-black ground, which is consistent and deep from end to end on the dark zones — confirmed from multiple white-background photographs. Against that depth, the cream motif lines read with strong contrast, and it is within those cream zones that the bloodspots concentrate most visibly.
Under macro photography, the cinnabar inclusions — 硃砂 (zhūshā), mercuric sulfide — appear as a warm reddish-orange saturation spread pervasively across the cream panels. This is not a scattering of isolated dots: the colour is present throughout the cream fields, covering large areas of the white zones with a continuous reddish wash beneath which individual micro-inclusions are visible. Three macro photographs document this across separate cream panels of the bead, and the density is consistent across all three. The overall effect, visible even in the standard product photographs, is a cream ground that reads as peach-to-warm-orange rather than pure white — the cinnabar has saturated the stone at the surface level over the course of two to three centuries.
The barrel form is notably straight-sided for an antique dzi of this age — the profile is more cylindrical than fusiform, with relatively flat end faces, giving this bead a distinct visual weight and presence. No chips or cracks are observed independently.
The Green Tara Motif
Green Tara (སྒྲོལ་མ་ལྗང་ཁུ, Drolma Jangkhu) is one of the most beloved deities of the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon — a female bodhisattva of compassionate action, believed to respond instantly to those who call upon her in times of fear or difficulty. She is associated with swift protection, the removal of obstacles, and the vitality of nature. On dzi beads, the Green Tara motif is understood to carry her active, responsive energy — a companion for those who seek protection and the clearing of obstructions from daily life. Beads carrying this motif are among the more sought-after pieces in Tibetan dzi tradition, both for their spiritual resonance and for the relative rarity of the composition among surviving antique pieces.
