The cream on this bead is not a single colour — it moves through the stone in layers, and the bloodspots follow it everywhere it goes.

Most two eye dzi beads present their motif against a plain dark ground. This one is different. The agate from which it was made carries flowing bands of cream-beige, warm grey, and medium brown that run the full length of the body — and the two eye motif sits within that banding rather than against a neutral backdrop. The eye rings pick up the cream of the stone itself, making the boundary between motif and material deliberately ambiguous. It is an unusual compositional effect, and it reads differently depending on which face you are looking at and how the light is falling.

The eyes themselves are large and softly formed — oval rings with brown pupil centres, carried on a ground where the surrounding banding gives the composition a sense of movement that a plain-ground bead simply does not have. The end borders are present but understated against the banding, keeping the visual emphasis on the eyes and the flowing stone beneath them.

Under macro photography, the cinnabar bloodspots — 硃砂 (zhūshā), mercuric sulfide — emerge in two distinct registers. At the drill end, they appear as a pervasive field of warm reddish-brown micro-dots scattered across the cream-beige end zone, visible in quantity and with clear coloration. Within the body, the concentration shifts inward: the dots gather with particular density within and immediately around the eye zone, creating a compound pattern where the bloodspot saturation is highest exactly where the motif is. This dual-zone distribution — end-cap pervasive plus eye-zone concentrated — is among the more complete bloodspot patterns documented in this collection.

The surface carries age-consistent micro-texture within the etched areas: a fine, slightly raised crystalline quality at the eye zones that reflects the slow mineralisation of the stone over centuries. This is a positive age marker. No chips or cracks are observed. The drill ends show cream-white high-gloss end caps consistent with quality agate throughout.

The Two Eye Motif

The two eye dzi (གཉིས་མིག, nyis mig) is among the most directly personal of the classical Tibetan dzi motifs. In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the two eyes are associated with Chenrezig — Avalokiteśvara, the bodhisattva of compassion — and the bead is believed to promote harmony in relationships, strengthen interpersonal bonds, and support the development of empathy and understanding in the wearer. A two eye dzi worn or carried through daily life is understood as a companion for navigating human connection, and pieces of this age — 200 to 400 years — have accumulated centuries of such intention.
