Antique Nine Eye Dzi, 53.7×12.2mm, warm dark brown agate, 200–400 years (At-071326-9E2)
🌿 Ethically sourced. Unretouched photos. What you see is what you receive.
This bead and its companion piece At-071326-9E share the same motif, the same age range, and the same crafting tradition — and the difference between them is in the silhouette.
Images 2 and 3 show it clearly from the two end angles: the taper on this piece is longer and more aggressive, the central body narrower, the overall profile a slender fusiform rather than the fuller oval of the companion. At 53.7×12.2mm — 1.1mm shorter and 0.3mm narrower — the bead reads as a different proportion in hand, carrying its length with less mass through the centre. On a strand, the two pieces would read as the same motif at the same scale but with a noticeably different silhouette.
The nine eyes follow the standard stepped S-curve layout across two rows, with the connector lines changing path on each face. Images 1, 4, and 5 show three faces in sequence. The motif lines carry a warm character throughout — not as evenly distributed as the companion piece, but present in the connector zones on all three faces, most visible in images 2 and 3 where the end-angle lighting catches the cream-gold warmth running between the eye groups. On faces A and B (images 1 and 4), the rings enclosing the eyes read as a cooler cream-white; through the connector paths, the warmth surfaces.
The ground is warm dark brown — confirmed brown rather than black across all five images. Image 5 shows the warm brown most clearly, where the flat lighting reads the ground tone as a rich, saturated brown rather than approaching pitch-black. The dark zones in images 1 and 4 show a subtle fine micro-pitting consistent with the surface of aged agate over two centuries or more. A small natural surface pit is visible on the upper dark zone of face A between the first and second eye groups (image 1) — disclosed.
Both drill holes are small, clean, and centred in warm honey-golden end caps at the tapered tips visible in images 2 and 3.
The Nine Eye Motif
The nine eye dzi (九眼天珠) holds the highest symbolic count in the Tibetan dzi tradition — nine representing the full accumulation of merit, protection across all directions, and comprehensive good fortune. At 200–400 years of age, a nine eye dzi has circulated through multiple generations of use and keeping. The motif was understood the same way by every person who held this bead across those generations: as a complete and powerful protective form.
